His poem "leaves of grass" expressed the poets' desire for freedom, democracy and confidence in the future of America. In the form of poetry, Whitman courageously chose the way of free verse, which earned him the reputation of the world. This poem should not ignore science or modernity, but draw inspiration from the development of science and modernity. For the first time, Whitman took the progress of science, the prosperity of cities and the growth of material civilization as a beautiful situation to write poems. This initiative made him a famous modern poet. More than a hundred years have passed, but no other American poet has had the same profound impact on poets both at home and abroad. This paper first briefly introduces Whitman's life and main works. The important works of the poet "leaves of grass" epoch-making meaning in the history of American literature is that it describes an overview of this new world, in response to the whole of the situation in the United States a historical period, the specific meaning of extremely rich essence of life and thinking. He is regarded as the father of modern poetry in the United States because of his epic poem "the leaves of grass". In the middle of the 19th century in America, it is the time of the rise of ethnic literature, Whitman himself as a national poet, he is an alive person, whether it is a literary or a reader, the evaluation of his poetry is mixed. He hopes that in the future he couldl call himself the poet of the future. Gradually over the time, Whitman's poetry gets more and more widely spread and accepted in the United States, Britain, France, Japan and many countries such as China . After the world war ii, he came to be recognized as America's the most important poet, and he is also the most important poet in the modern literary history of the world. In 1919, walt Whitman and his poems were translated into Chinese, so far, Whitman’s research in China has more than 90 years history. Whitman is also the most popular one and the largest influence foreign writers in China since the "May 4th". With the spread of Whitman in China, acceptance and the development of the phase locked study, many translators, poet, comments and scholars to the American poet and his poetry creation also deepen and enrich unceasingly, in different historical periods shows the different studies of characteristics. 1.2 Whitman and his Major Works Walt Whitman has been long labeled as a city poet, and his masterpiece, "the leaves of grass", contains a lot of urban life scenes depictions.
