1Ali Javaheri Associate Analyst,Emerging TEMERGING SPACE BRIEFDigital TwinsOriginally published June 8,2023Trending companiesOverviewDigital twins are virtual replicas of physical assets, constructed via sensor data, connectivity, and analytics. They are used across sectors such as manufacturing, automotive, healthcare, and energy to provide real-time monitoring, modeling, and optimization. For instance, digital twins can simulate production lines in factories, vehicle performance under different conditions, health risks in patients,or environmental effects on power generators. They facilitate advanced applications such as predictive maintenance, performance simulations, and efficiency optimization.Bridging the virtual and physical worlds, digital twins allow continuous data exchange and visualization, offering invaluable insights for decision making and strategic planning.BackgroundA concept similar to digital twins has roots in the 1960s when NASA pioneered the use of digital technology during the Apollo 13 moon mission.Simulators were set up on the real spaceship prior to departure, allowing engineers to run situational simulations while the spacecraft was in space. These simulators, which were more physical than digital,1 proved crucial when the mission encountered critical malfunctions,as engineers could assess and recreate the conditions on board the malfunctioning shuttle.By guiding the crew with the help of computer-controlled models, they successfully averted a potential disaster and safely brought the crew home.2 The current iteration of“digital twins”was solidified in the 2000s when Michael Grieves presented the development of a product lifecycle management center at the University of Michigan in 2002.This center encompassed all the essential elements associated with a digital twin, including a physical space,a virtual space, and the exchange of information between the two.Brendan Burke Senior Analyst,Emerging T1:“Physical Twins,Digital Twins, and the cutting-edge technologies, leveraging advancements in Big Data, artificial intelligence, multimodal interactions(MMI),secure connectivity, and high-performance computing. This convergence is what enables the implementation and effective operation of digital twins.4Big Data:At the core of digital twins is the accumulation of huge amounts of data, primarily from the Internet of Things(IoT)and social networks.IoT collects data through physical sensors such as pressure gauges, light sensors, and cameras.Meanwhile,“soft sensors”leverage software and social media to gather additional information about the physical twins health and status. This constant and varied data flow provides the raw data, which is eventually turned into structured data,to create a digital replica of the physical entity.Artificial intelligence:The massive, unstructured nature of the collected data requires advanced AI to analyze and extract meaningful insights.Technologies such as machine learning, deep learning, ontologies, and fuzzy logic enable this analysis and allow digital twins to understand the data.Multimodal interactions:After analyzing the data and gleaning insights, digital twins employ MMI to communicate with and reflect their physical counterparts.MMI can manifest as physical replicasusing soft robotics,haptics,AR/VRvirtual avatars,or audio/visual interfaces. These MMIs are employed to garner insights about a physical assets functioning and are sometimes used to make alterations to the physical asset via the digital interface. These interfaces provide an intuitive link, enabling real-time response and interaction, fostering seamless synchronization between the physical and digital worlds.Secure connectivity:Connecting massive data,AI,and MMI necessitates robust and secure networks, ranging from simpler options like Bluetooth to more complex wide area networks.Sensitive,real-time data especially demands high-speed networks.Technologies such as blockchain and biometrics help safeguard privacy, identity, and data integrity.High-performance computing:Digital twins harness the processing power of advanced systems such as supercomputers, specialized hardware, and distributed computing to manage their substantial data volume and computational requirements.Together, these technologies allow digital twins to continuously monitor, understand, and enhance their physical counterparts. This creates a constant feedback loop for optimizing system performance and qualityalso known as the digital thread. The synergistic integration of these technologies elevates digital twins beyond standard data analytics.4:“The Potential of Digital Twins,”IEEE Xplore,Abdulmotaleb El Saddik,Fedwa Laamarti and Mohammad AljaAfreh,May 19,2021.4TypeDescriptionExample exitM&A:79%probabilityM&A:86%probabilityM&A:93%probabilityM&A:94%probabilityApplicationsThe utility of digital twins technology benefits a multitude of industrial and data-driven sectors.Examples of these sectors include:Manufacturing:Digital twins can be used to create virtual representations of manufacturing processes and assembly lines. These simulations can help identify potential inefficiencies or bottlenecks and allow for changes to be made before they impact the physical manufacturing process.Healthcare:Digital twins of human organs could be created for personalized medicine. They can help to simulate different treatment options for a specific patient, enabling doctors to optimize treatment plans.Digital twins also have the potential to improve drug development processes.Smart cities:Cities can use digital twins to optimize infrastructure, utilities, and services. For example, digital twins could be used to simulate and manage traffic flows, optimize waste management,or plan for urban growth and development.Automotive and aerospace:Digital twins can be used to design, test, and optimize vehicles, aircraft, and their subsystems under different conditions. They can also aid in predictive maintenance, determining when parts might fail and need replacement before issues arise.5Energy:In the renewable energy sector, digital twins of wind turbines or solar panels can optimize their performance and maintenance. In traditional energy sectors, digital twins can be used to simulate and optimize oil and gas extraction and production.Supply chain:Digital twins can optimize logistics and supply chain management, allowing companies to model and predict outcomes based on various factors such as demand, supply, and disruptions.Infrastructure:Digital twins can assist in the planning, building, and maintenance of infrastructure projects such as bridges, tunnels, and buildings. They can help to optimize designs, predict potential structural issues, and aid in disaster response.Retail:Retail businesses can use digital twins to optimize their store layouts, supply chain, and inventory management. They can also use them to analyze consumer behavior.Agriculture:Digital twins can simulate various scenarios such as weather conditions, soil properties, and crop behavior to improve yield and manage resources effectively.LimitationsWhile digital twins present vast potential, they also have limitations that impact their market adoption.Establishing a digital twin requires substantial resources, which could deter smaller firms.Furthermore, adoption is slow, sales cycles stretch from six to 12 months, and only 28%of manufacturers have developed advanced digital twins.5 Concerns around data quality, privacy, security, and a lack of standardization and regulatory clarity add to these challenges.Recent deal activity and market outlookWhile spending on digital twin software is relatively low compared to general analytics, the market is projected to grow substantially. In 2022as referenced in our H2 2022 IoT Reportwe estimate the market reached$6.5 billion and will grow at a 33.8%CAGR to$15.6 billion by 2025.This projection includes only the technology, excluding services.Driving this growth are tech giants who are making considerable investments in digital twin creation to boost industrial use of their cloud services. For instance,NVIDIAs GTC conference in September 2022 highlighted new digital twin capabilities as part of the Omniverse platform. The conference also announced early adopters, including manufacturing giants Lockheed Martin and Jaguar Land Rover.NVIDIAs$15.0 million investment in smart buildings startup PassiveLogic in Q3 2022 is another demonstration of its commitment to the field.AWS and Microsoft Azures launches of digital twin services in 2022 and 2021,respectively,show that digital twins are increasingly becoming a focus area for tech companies.5:“IoT Signals Manufacturing Spotlight,”Microsoft,Intel,August 2022.6Smart buildings have emerged as a leading use case for digital twin software, with several notable fundings in the building-monitoring market. For instance,Europe-based startups Disperse and Modulous raised rounds of$16.0 million and$12.0 million, respectively, during H2 2022both focusing on construction analytics and digital twins of construction sites. In the same period,Cupix, another company specializing in similar services,secured$13.7 million in a Series C round.Moving into 2023,VEERUM,a company concentrated on digitized infrastructure management,raised$9.3 million in a late-stage VC round in March.Companies operating across the spectrum of use cases are also raising notable
