children can do independently, establish work groups. These are heterogeneous groups of children who are scheduled for the same center activities on a daily basis. You can change the groups as often as you like.Introducing the Work BoardOne way to schedule independent literacyactivities is a work board.A typical work board includes the names of small-group members and icons that representindependent tasks. The work boardfor the Literacy Center Kit is the pocketchart and the icon cards. To set up the work board, place group names in a vertical column as shown in sample.Next to each group, place Icons to represent activities for the day.Rotate group cards each day, giving each group a new set of activities,or adjust the groups to allow children to continue on a previous task.Introducing Literacy CentersBefore beginning a routine, acquaint children with procedures for use of each area. All center activities should involve literacy with a balance of reading and writing tasks.Label station with its name or icon.Make certain each center has the supplies needed to perform the required tasks.Add new supplies as tasks change.Plan for accommodation of complete and incomplete tasks and materials storage.Help children understand how much time they will spend in a center. For example, they might listen to one tape recording in the Listening/Speaking Center or manipulate letters or words in a Letters and Sounds Center.Show children how to use the cassette or CD player, computer, headphones, and other necessary equipment.Demonstrate proper usage of tools.?RXENL08AMSG1_LCTOC.indd
