trees in the country, along the banks of rivers, and in wide valleys. There are trees almost everywhere people go.3RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 3RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 311/16/06 4:28:44 PM11/16/06 4:28:44 PM There are many different kinds of trees, but all trees have the same basic parts. They are the leaves, trunk, roots, branches, and bark. Each of these parts does something important to help the tree live. The picture on this page shows each of the parts of a tree.barktrunkleavesrootsbranches4RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 4RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 411/16/06 4:29:19 PM11/16/06 4:29:19 PM All trees have branches that come out of the trunk. When a branch gets large, new branches grow out of it.Then these new branches get larger, and small new branches grow from them.A single tree grows hundreds of branches over the years.5RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 5RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 511/16/06 4:29:32 PM11/16/06 4:29:32 PM Most branches grow near the top of the tree. These top branches spread out.The main job of the branches is to hold the tree s many leaves.6RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 6RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 611/16/06 4:29:49 PM11/16/06 4:29:49 PM You usually don t see the roots when you look at a tree. That s because the roots are like long branches that grow underground. The roots hold the tree in place so that it doesn t fall over.A tree would not stay in the ground without its roots.7RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 7RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 711/16/06 4:30:05 PM11/16/06 4:30:05 PM Roots absorb,or take in,water for the tree. The roots soak up water that is in the ground. This is how the tree“drinks.”Roots also take in minerals from the ground.Minerals are materials, such as iron, that help the tree grow.roots8RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 8RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 811/16/06 4:30:21 PM11/16/06 4:30:21 PM The trunk is the tall, thick part of the tree. The trunk grows straight up from the roots. It gets thicker and taller as the tree grows. Some trunks can grow to be over 100 feet(30 m)tall and about 4 feet(1.22 m)wide.9RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 9RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 911/16/06 4:30:48 PM11/16/06 4:30:48 PM The trunk has two jobs. One job is to hold the branches, and the other job is to move food and water through the tree. The trunk has tiny tubes inside it.The food and water move through the tubes.10RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 10RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 1011/16/06 4:31:03 PM11/16/06 4:31:03 PM Have you ever felt the trunk of a tree?If you have then you know that trees have a rough covering on them called bark.Bark is like a tree s skin. Its job is to protect the tree.11RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 11RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 1111/16/06 4:31:18 PM11/16/06 4:31:18 PM Both the branches and the trunk of a tree have bark, but the trunk bark is thicker than the branch bark. Some trees have thick, rough bark while other trees have thin, smooth bark.12RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 12RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 1211/16/06 4:31:34 PM11/16/06 4:31:34 PM All trees have leaves, and leaves are very important.Leaves make food for the tree.Leaves look green because of the little green sacs inside the leaves. These tiny sacs use sunlight to make food for the tree.13RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 13RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 1311/16/06 4:31:51 PM11/16/06 4:31:51 PM Some trees, such as pine trees, have skinny leaves shaped like needles. The leaves of other trees can be very large. For example, the leaves of some palm trees are 4 feet(1.22 m)wide and 20 feet(6 m)long!Trees have a lot in common. The main thing they have in common, though,is that they are an important part of our world!14RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 14RXENL08ARD3E14_ELL.indd 1411/16/06 4:32:09 PM11/16/06 4:32:09 PMTo the TeacherScaffolded Language DevelopmentPREPOSITIONS Review prepositions with students by pointing out examples in the book, such as in and on.Then draw a picture on the board of a tree with roots, leaves, and a line marking ground level.Read each sentence frame below.Have students chorally respond with the word from the word bank that correctly completes the sentence. Then have them read the completed sentences.Demonstrate the meaning of each preposition by pointing to each part of the tree as the students read the sentences.Word Bank:around,on,in,below,above1.The roots grow ground level.2.The leaves sprout the branches.3.The bark wraps the tree.4.The trunk grows ground level.5.The leaves have green sacs them.ScienceShow What You Know Have students write fi ve sentences that state facts about trees.Encourage them to use the words trunk, bark, leaves, branches, and roots.School-Home ConnectionTalk About Trees Have students take a walk with a family member and point out the different parts of trees.Have them feel the bark to see whether it is smooth or rough.Word
