PM8/03/12 12:31 PMAfter my first day of school in America,Im miserable.I just want to go home to Vavau. This country is crazy;I dont know the customs, and I feel as if Im doing everything wrong.I listen to my brother,Tevita, and sister,Alisi, chattering about their day.Its easy for Tevita;hes 15 and fabulous at sports,so hes found his place already among all the other sports-obsessed boys at school. And when youre just seven, like Alisi, everything is simple,I guess. It seems 12 is more complicated.I sigh, and my mother,Sela, raises an eyebrow at me.Its her way of asking whats wrong.I try to smile, and I just say,“My new school is so enormous.”I dont tell her how terrified I was of getting lost or how nobodyabsolutely nobodywas wearing a white button-up blouse and blue skirt like the ones she mademe bring from Tonga.Chapter 1All Wrong Ofa2Program:CR 14Component:LRG6U4W4-APDFVendor:Learning MediaLevel:50001_009_CR14_LR_G6_U4W4L50_A_118637.indd 2001_009_CR14_LR_G6_U4W4L50_A_118637.indd 28/03/12 say.I tell him how the teacher called out everyones name, and all the others said,“Present.”But I didnt have a present,so I said no,and they laughed.“They didnt mean a present to give,”James explains, smiling kindly.“Present also means here.”I feel a bit silly but relieved.“Any other misunderstandings?”he asks.My words come out in a rush.“Well.when I took my shoes off at the door, people pointed at me,and Im not supposed to wear my shorts and T-shirt swimming.I have to get a swimsuit.Plus, nobody takes chicken and sweet potatoes for lunch.”I stop talking,a little out of breath.Ive said too much, but I cant help myself.James nods as if he understands.“I know this is a huge adjustment for you,but I think you will adapt sooner than you can imagine.3Program:CR take my shoes off at school, too, but my new friends told me people dont do that here.”“And my friends say I shouldnt call you James and Sela,”Alisi chimes in.“I should call you Mom and Dad.”“Well,my name isnt Mom,so dont call me that, please!”Sela says with a laugh. She turns to me.“Did you make any friends,Ofa?”“No,”I say.“Maybe tomorrow.”“Thats the spirit,”James says.“You might travel all over someday. You might lead a nomadic life”“Lets just cope with life in America first,”says Sela.“Ofa,theres nothing wrong with having chicken and kumala for lunch. But if it helps you settle in,Ill put it take some tapa-cloth bookmarks Ive brought from Tonga.Maybe Ill find some kids who like to read as much as I do.I check my lunch and see that Sela has made sandwiches.“Malo,”I say.“Thanks.”“Well,I want you to feel comfortable at school.”She gives me a hug and adds,“But remember, its no disgrace to be Tongan.”As soon as I get to school,I go to the girls room to change into my light-blue T-shirt and let my hair down.Ashleigh and Katelyn, two girls from my class, come in as I am brushing it.“Wow,your hair is amazing!”Ashleigh exclaims.“Do you want to borrow some lipstick?”Katelyn asks.I smile and shake my head:I have already made enough changes today. They walk with me to class, and when the teacher calls our names,Im so busy concentrating on saying yes,I forget to speak English.“Io,”I call at all yesterday,so Im surprised that she is speaking up for me.“Im sorry,Ofa.What did you say?”Mr.Coleman says kindly.“I said iothats yes in Tongan.”“I see,”he says.“Thank you for sharing that. Its wonderful for the class to have the opportunity to learn about other cultures.Actually, were going to the library to research a country of our choice for our next project.”I hear Ashleigh whisper to Katelyn,“We should do Tonga with Ofathen we wont have to research much.”Id rather learn about a different country, but I want them to like me,so I smile and say nothing.6Program:CR quickly finds a book on the Pacific and flips through it to a map.“Heres Hawaii. My aunt went there and brought me back a coconut-shell bikini top like hula dancers wear. Can you do the hula,Ofa?”“No,Tonga is a different country, and we have our own dances. We dont have coconut bikini tops, but we have tapa cloth. Its made of pounded bark and painted with traditional patterns, like these bookmarks,”I tell her, taking them out ofmy bag.I offer the bookmarks to the kids around me,and they are gone so fast that Emily misses out.Im sorry, since she helped me at roll call. The librarian,Miss Tait, explains how to take books out,and I ask how many I can take out at once.“Ah,so youre a bookworm,”Miss Tait says with a smile. It seems mean to call me a worm, but she doesnt look as if shes being find Alisi, and we sit on the sturdy bench outside school, waiting for Tevita.I spot a small white dog huddled against the fence with a woman. The dog looks tiny in the midst of so many people.I feel a bit like that in this crowd where everything is fast and unfamiliar.I wonder if Alisi feels the way I do,but she looks content enough.A girl leans over to pat the dog,her hair falling across her face. The dog runs in circles, clearly overjoyed to be reunited with its owner. After untangling the leash, the girl turns around, and I see that its Emily.I nudge Alisi and say,“That girl is in my class.Lets ask if we can pet the dog.”Emily is happy that we like her dog,Pip.Chapter 3Doing Whats Right8Program:CR 14Component:LRG6U4W4-APDFVendor:Learning homesick after all.I tell Emily and her mother that there are cats, chickens, pigs, and dogs everywhere in Vavau, running loose all over the roads.“It was like that in Fiji when I was there,”Emilys mother says, smiling fondly.“It must seem very different here.”I agree that it does. Then I notice that Emily is carrying a book about Tonga.“Are you interested in Tonga?”I ask her.She blushes bright pink and nods.“I really want to travel someday, the way Mom did. There are lots of cool fish in Tonga, arent there?”“There are!We have colorful reef fish and sea snakes, and humpback whales there too.”“Imagine swimming with whales,”Emily says wistfully.“I sure hope we can do that someday,”says her mom.“But for now, lets get to the pool for a swim.”Emily and her mom wave good-bye as they walk away with Pip Emilys lunchbox,so I ask her what it is.“Lasagna,”she says, making a face.“I always get leftovers. Its embarrassing! What do you have?”“Leftovers, too! But I asked SelaI mean,my momto put them in
