The Duke of Gloucester told his son, Edmund, the secret, he had no idea that Edmund would disclose it to Regan and Cornwall. When Cornwall knew King Lear had fled, he was very angry. He decided to punish Gloucester with death and he proclaimed his son Edmund as successor to the Earl of Kent. At that time, King Lear's youngest daughter Cordelia arrived at Dover of England with her army from France. While in France, she worried about her father's situation with her two older sisters. So she sent messengers to inquire about her father. News of his ill-treatments and hands of Gonerial and Regan came to her and saddened her. She could bear no more. Cordelia was in tears. She requested the King of France help her to restore her father to his rightful position by sending an army to intervene. The King of France agreed with Cordelia's request, and let her lead the French army to fight against England.
