Organic farming
All food sold as organic must be produced in accordance with standards set out in European law on organic production. This requires food sold as organic to originate from growers, processors and importers who are registered and approved by organic inspection bodies on the basis of a rigorous annual inspection.
In most Member States, including the UK, registration and control of organic operators is carried out by private sector inspection bodies approved by and acting under the control of the national government or one of its agencies. In the UK currently there are nine private sector inspection bodies. The Control Bodies ensure the integrity of the organic product being placed on the market. The Control Bodies must inspect each of their licensees at least once a year and flag up any areas where the operator is not complying with the Regulations. The Control Bodies will need to take action where serious breaches of the Regulation are found or where previous findings have been ignored
There is an additional requirement within the EU Regulation, implemented from January 2014,, to undertake an additional 10% of visits per control body. Alongside this there is a requirement to undertake 10% unannounced visits.
The UK inspection bodies are subject annual approval on the basis of an examination by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). The enforcement authorities (Local Authorities) have the powers to enforce the organic regulations at the point of sale.
Labels on food sold as 'organic' must indicate the organic certification body that the processor or packer is registered with. The labels must, as a minimum, include a code number that denotes the approved certification body. The name or trademark (logo) of the certification body may also, but does not have to be, shown on the label. It is not always possible to make products entirely from organic ingredients, since not all ingredients are available in organic form. Manufacturers of organic food are permitted to use specific non-organic ingredients provided that the organic ingredients make up at least 95% of the food.

DEFRA
We are the UK government department responsible for policy and regulations on environmental, food and rural issues. Our priorities are to grow the rural economy, improve the environment and safeguard animal and plant health.
SOIL ASSOCIATION
The Soil Association was founded in 1946 by a group of farmers, scientists and nutritionists who observed a direct connection between farming practice and plant, animal, human and environmental health.
Today, we are the UK's leading membership charity campaigning for healthy, humane and sustainable food, farming and land use. We have over 150 staff based in Bristol and Edinburgh and working as certification inspectors across the country. The Soil Association's Chief Executive is Helen Browning, who reports to the Council of Trustees.
You might expect something so vital to be organised and supported by the government. But in fact the Soil Association is a charity, reliant on donations and on the support of its members and the public to carry out its work.
OFF(Organic Food Federation)
The Organic Food Federation was established in 1986 and is now one of the UK’s leading certification bodies operating nationally in all areas of organics.
The Federation (operating under the code GB-ORG-04) provides a professional and personal service to a wide range of registrants.
Organix
In 1992 Organix was founded by Lizzie Vann who believed that it was a business that not only could, but should, change society for the better.
We were founded with a vision to create a world where healthy nutritious food was a real choice for everyone by doing three things:
· creating great food
· empowering parents
· challenging the government and food industry
When our first baby foods went on the shelves it was a proud moment. It was organic, tasty and had labelling parents could understand. This set a benchmark and it’s been the way we’ve worked ever since. We want to ensure that what we make, how we sell it and what we say about it creates better choices for children’s health.
