I’ve spent a long time thinking about one of the lessons life has to offer uncertainty. I often hear, “Nothing could have prepared us for this pandemic.” While it came as a surprise, some of us have had to deal with times of great uncertainty before.
This was the case for my family when my father began falling over. We would blame the ice. Then just the road. “Who makes these things so high?” we wondered. Then, he slowed. He began to drag his feet. “Well,” we said, “he’s getting older.”
When his speech became worse, it became harder to explain. When did he last see a doctor anyway? We searched the Internet as he worsened—because we felt real medical attention was not required.
Uncertainty.
It’ s uncomfortable. It makes your stomach tighten. If you don’ t fight it, it will seep through (渗入) your body, lighting your brain up with anxiety. When a neurologist (神经病学家) explained the problem, it wasn’ t what we wanted to hear. Instead, we opened a Pandora’ s box of even more unknowns.
When we found out he had AIS (肌肉萎缩性侧面硬化病) the uncertainty became a burden. He was losing control of his muscles, his speech, ability to swallow—and we were paralyzed on how to prepare.
ALS is cruel. It traps you in your body. When the future looks so dark, you have to take comfort in the tiniest pleasures. I wish I’d done more. But I was new to uncertainty. I’d never experienced such a lack of control. I was focused on solving problem that couldn’t be solved.
I worried about how my father would get worse. I read everything I could to try and help his situation, but there was nothing I could do. But my dad didn’t live long enough for me to prepare for his condition to get worse. Life doesn’t go according to plan and there is a difference between preparation and worry.
As we battle global uncertainty, it is teaching us the same lesson. A lesson about humility (谦卑) . About the fact that you cannot save something you love alone. If COVID -19 is disturbing everyone, we should consider what we can learn. These lessons are hard, teaching us to hold on to what matters and how to let go.
24. Why is the pandemic mentioned in the beginning?
A. To explain its impact on the author’ s life.
B. To lead up to the topic of uncertainty.
C. To show how the author got used to it.
D. To tell the lessons the author learned from it.
25. How did the author feel after his / her father was diagnosed with ALS?
A. Anxious B. Peaceful C. Annoyed D. Optimistic
26. What can we conclude about uncertainty from the article?
A. It makes people stronger.
B. It leads to a lack of control.
C. It brings family closer to each other.
D. It can remove the darkness in life.
27. What is the lesson mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. Be humble to the unknown.
B. Prepare for uncertainty in advance.
C. Express our love before it’ s too late.
D. Cherish what matters and learn to let go.
C
Microplastic pollution is increasing dramatically around the globe, according to a study of airborne (空气传播的) plastic particles (粒子) .
People are already known to breathe, drink and eat microplastics, and research suggests that pollution levels will continue to rise rapidly. The researchers said that inhaling ( 吸入) these particles can irritate (刺激) lung tissue and lead to serious diseases.
Professor Natalie Mahowald, at Cornell University in the US and part of the research team, said: “But maybe we could solve this before it becomes a huge problem, if we manage our plastics better, before they accumulate (积聚) in the environment and swirl (打旋) around everywhere.”
The research, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, examined airborne microplastics, which have been far less studied than plastic in oceans and rivers.
The team gathered more than 300 samples of airborne microplastics from 11 sites across the western US. These were the basis for atmospheric modeling that estimated the contribution from different sources, and was the first such study to do so.
They found that roads were the dominant factor in the western US, linked to about 85 percent of the microplastics in the air. These are likely to include particles from tires and brake pads on vehicles, and plastics from litter that had been broken down.
The researchers extended their modeling work to a global level and this suggested that while roads are also likely to be the dominant driver of airborne plastics in Europe, South America and Australia, plastic particles blown up from fields may be a much bigger factor in Africa and Asia.
Professor Andreas Stohl of the University of Vienna’s Faculty of Earth Sciences, and not part of the study team, said: “The study confirms the global-scale nature of microplastic transport in the atmosphere and does a good job in highlighting highly relevant and concerning possibilities, but more measurement data is needed to get a better idea of the sources. “
28. What do we know about microplastic pollution from the text?
A. It has become the most pressing environmental problem.
B. The particles can do great harm to our lungs.
C. Airborne microplastics have been widely studied.
D. There is more plastic in the air than in oceans.
29. What did the researchers find out about airborne plastic pollution?
A. Its impact varies on different continents.
B. Public transportation is largely to blame for it.
C. Its dominant driver differs across continents.
D. Africa is suffering the most from the pollution.
30. According to Professor Andreas Stohl, the next step of the study is to __________.
A. predict the potential damages of microplastics.
B. understand the nature of airborne plastic pollution globally.
C. get more data to understand the sources of microplastics.
D. improve the method of collecting samples of microplastics.
31. What could be the best title for the text?
A. Effects of microplastics on human health
B. Plastic pollution rising rapidly in the air
C. Possible solutions to plastic pollution
D. Plastic pollution on the global scale
D
How does our memory work, and how can we use it to the best of our ability on a daily basis? This question is at the heart of many neuroscience (神经系统科学) research projects, and now the reward system is at the center of investigations.
By examining brain activity in healthy human subjects, scientists from the University of Geneva ( UNIGE ) have highlighted the lasting positive effect of a monetary (钱的) reward on individuals’ ability to store a variety of information.
“The positive influence of a reward on memory is a well-known phenomenon,” said Sophie Schwartz, professor at the UNIGE Faculty of Medicine, who led this work. However, the experiment addressed two questions: Does the effect last over time, and what role does the accumulation (累积) of reward play?
Using magnetic resonance imaging—an imaging technique that allows real-time observation of the brain in action—30 healthy subjects were asked to remember associations between objects and people. Each correct answer earned points, and incorrect answers lost points. Participants were then asked to retrieve these associations to earn additional points. They were given monetary rewards based on their total number of points. Critically, the average number of points that could be gained varied over the course of the experiment.
Kristofer Aberg, the study’s first author, stated : “The best results were not associated with the highest accumulation of rewards. “
Schwartz added, “Our brain needs rewards to motivate us, but also challenges. If the task is too easy, motivation decreases as quickly as if it is too difficult.”
The hippocampus primarily manages memory, but when a reward is involved, the ventral tegmental area (腹侧盖膜区) of the brain releases dopamine (多巴胺) : the hormone (荷尔蒙) related to satisfaction. “ It is the dialogue between these two brain areas that helps maintain motivation, improve learning, and consolidate ( 巩固) memories, even over time, “ explained Aberg.
32. What is one purpose of the experiment?
A. To discover what role rewards plays in affecting our memory.
B. To find an effective approach to improving our memory.
C. To test if rewards motivate the brain to perform better.
D. To investigate if rewards have an enduring effect on our memory.
33. What does the underlined word “retrieve” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Recall B. Choose C. Discover D. Explain
34. What did the study find?
A. Results varied in different stages of the study.
B. Both rewards and challenges affect the result.
C. The more rewards we get, the better memory we have.
D. Those who received the most rewards achieved the best results.
35. The main purpose of the last paragraph is to explain __________.
A. how the hormone decreases
B. the importance of dopamine
C. the brain mechanisms at work
D. how the brain gets satisfaction
