In 2013, Gabby Frost founded Buddy Project when she was 15. At that time her best friend had been diagnosed(诊断)with a mental health condition, and that was the first time she was made aware of what mental illness was. She wanted to learn more and develop a good support system for her.
Mental illness affects tens of millions of people in the United States each year, yet only half receive treatment, according to the National Institutes of Mental Health. Buddy Project's website says the service is not a substitute for therapy or other types of mental health care, and that it directs people to resources for further help.
Since founding the organization as a high school student, Frost has helped more than 200,000 participants find a new friend. On the day when Buddy Project was launched, she used her powerful social media presence to attract nearly 3,000 participants. “This was around the time when teens really began talking about mental health and found a supportive community online to talk about it," she said.
One of the biggest social barriers she had to jump over was that people didn't view her seriously because she was a 15-year-old girl, and even now, she's still a young woman. “Sometimes it's frustrating because people don't think what I do is needed or they don't think I'm professional,” she said. “Most people are blown away that a 20-year-old girl is running this and that it's one person doing this but not a whole team. I'm just lucky that I've found a support system that has been able to help my mum and me with the project.”
24. Why did Gabby Frost set up Buddy Project?
A. To treat her mental disease.
B. To know what causes mental illness.
C. To help her friend to fight the mental disease.
D. To cure those with mental illness.
25. What can we infer from Paragraph 2?
A. Americans pay little attention to mental health.
B. Many Americans have trouble with mental health.
C. Buddy Project provides financial aid for patients.
D. Buddy Project can cure those with mental illness.
26. What problem did Frost face?
A. She couldn't get support from her mother.
B. She couldn't help so many patients at a time.
C. She wasn't able to attract enough participants.
D. She wasn't thought well of because of her age.
27. What do the underlined words “blown away” probably mean?
A. Completely defeated. B. Totally convinced.
C. Strongly impressed. D. Fully satisfied.
C
No matter how advanced technology gets, it can never be a substitute for good doctors and medical workers. During this year alone, health care professionals from all over the world have been putting themselves in a harmful way to treat COVID-19 patients. In times like this it is more important than ever that everyone has access to a doctor. But, according to statistics from the WHO, China has 19.79 medical doctors per 10,000 people (2017), the US has 26.12, and the UK has 27.86.
However, the rise of telemedicine allows doctors to make better use of their time and provides better health care access, especially for those in rural areas. Telemedicine is the remote delivery of health care services, including online consultations and diagnoses, and remote patient monitoring.
According to the World Economy Forum, nearly every other industry adopted widespread use of conference calls, and more recently, used video chats in order to cooperate remotely, while health care providers and patients both hesitated to adopt these tools to deliver health care. However, COVID-19 could push them to adopt the new approach. Having one of the best health care systems in the world, Switzerland already offers virtual video appointments for private patients, and with cloud computing, this care can go even further.
With patient data being stored in the cloud, medical records can be easily shared and updated by all health care providers when required. With the addition of powerful cloud networks, wearable technology, such as bracelets, can monitor a patient's key signs from their homes, removing the need for hospital care.
Seema, administrator of Medicare and Medicaid Centre, told the Wall Street Journal, “The arrival of telehealth has been just completely speeded, and it's taken this crisis to push us to a new frontier.” Indeed, telemedicine will have a huge effect on medical care, allowing for more personalized treatment of patients after COVID-19 has relieved.
28.What service doesn't telemedicine offer to online patients?
A. Online operations. B. Online consultations.
C. Remote patient monitoring. D. Virtual video appointments.
29.What is Seema's attitude towards the future of telemedicine?
A. Worried. B. Doubtful.
C. Optimistic. D. Cautious.
30.What can we infer from the text?
A. The number of medical doctors per 10,000 is relatively small in China.
B. The UK has the largest number of medical doctors in the world.
C. Only Switzerland has the most developed medical system in the world.
D. Conference calls and video chats have been used widely in telemedicine.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for this text?
A. The side effects of COVID-19 B. Online medical care
C. The shortage of medical care D. The advanced medical technology
D
The word paradigm(范式思维) comes from the Greek. lt was originally a scientific term, and is more commonly used today to mean a model or theory. In the more general sense, it's the way we “see” the world—not in terms of our visual sense of sight, but in terms of perceiving, understanding and interpreting.
A simple way to understand paradigms is to see them as maps. We all know that “the map is not the territory.” A map is simply an explanation of certain aspects of the territory. That's exactly what a paradigm is. It is a theory, an explanation, or model of something else. You can never arrive at a specific location in a new city with a wrong map.
Each of us has many maps in our head, which can be divided into two main categories: maps of the way things are, or realities, and maps of the way things should be, or values. We interpret everything we experience through these mental maps. We seldom question their accuracy; we’re usually even unaware that we have them. We simply assume that the way we see things is the way they really are or the way they should be. And our attitudes and behaviors grow out of those assumptions. The way we see things is the source of the way we think and the way we act.
We see the world, not as it is, but as we are—or, as we are conditioned to see it. Clearheaded people see things differently, each looking through the unique lens of experience. But this does not mean that there are no facts. Instead, each person’s interpretation of these facts represents prior experiences.
The more aware we are of our basic paradigms, maps, or assumptions, and the extent to which we have been influenced by our experience, the more we can take responsibility for those paradigms, examine them, test them against reality, listen to others and be open to their perceptions, thereby getting a larger picture and a far more objective view.
32.How does the author illustrate the concept of “paradigm”?
A. By comparing it to an everyday object.
B. By sorting it into different categories.
C. By presenting personal examples.
D. By highlighting a sharp contrast.
33. What can be concluded about the mental maps mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. They fail to escape our attention.
B. They may be lacking in accuracy.
C. They prove wrong and unreliable.
D. They have little influence on behavior.
34. Which of the following is supported by the main idea of paragraph 4?
A. Great minds think alike.
B. All men have opinions, but few think.
C. Where we stand depends on where we sit.
D. The fewer the facts, the stronger the opinions.
35. What does the author advocate in the last paragraph?
A. A better understanding of our paradigms.
B. A stronger sense of responsibility for others.
C. A more objective view of others’ perceptions.
D. A more positive attitude toward life experience.
第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How to survive a stampede
At least 154 people were killed and more than 100 others injured in a stampede accident that occurred at Itaewon, Seoul, Korea, during a Halloween gathering, local authorities said early Sunday morning. What should we do in case of similar crowding and trampling accidents? Here are a few tips to increase the chances of survival in an incident.
Look for exits
If you are in a crowd, a first and most important thing is to make yourself familiar with your surroundings and mentally notice alternate exits. 36 .
Keep an eye on the crowd
37 ,as panic situations can often be expected. When in danger, a few seconds can make all the difference, giving you the possibility of taking advantage of your escaping route.
38
If you find yourself in the middle of a moving crowd do not fight against the pressure, do not stand still or sit down, because you could easily get trampled. Move in the same direction of the crowd keeping your hands up by your chest like a boxer — it gives you movement and protects your chest.
Protect your head
If you fall, get up quickly. 39 , or if that is not possible, then cover your head with your arms and curl up into the fetal position (do not lay on your stomach or back, as this dangerously exposes your lungs).
Move diagonally towards the exit
After you’re pushed forward, like in a wave there’s a lull(间歇)
