B By the time she turned 18, Khadijah Williams had attended twelve schools. She had lived in shelters, in parks, and in motels, never in a permanent residence for more than a few months. She had been laughed at and looked down upon by students at a dozen schools who thought of her as “different”. Homeless since early childhood, Khadijah struggled all her life to hide her circumstances from teachers and fellow students. However, academic achievement proved to be a way for her to find confidence in herself again. For instance, at the age of 9, she placed in the 99th percentile on a state exam, and her teacher told her she was “gifted”. From that moment forward, Khadijah decided to do whatever it took to keep herself in that category. “I was so proud of being smart. I often heard my fellow students say, ‘You got the easy way out because you're homeless,’” she told The LA Times. “But I never saw it as an excuse about living a less successful life.” By the second year of high school, she realized that she could not succeed in getting the education she dreamed of without getting help to go beyond what her current school could offer. She talked to teachers and advisers who helped her apply for summer community college classes, scholarships, and enrichment programs. And in the 11th grade, when she enrolled at Jefferson High School, she decided to complete the rest of her school career there—a decision that meant taking a bus each morning at 4 a.m. and not getting home until 11 p.m. Here's the end of the story—when Khadijah poured the story of her life into her Harvard University college application, she was accepted. 4. What makes Khadijah confident in herself? A.Her different personality. B.Her ability to live well alone. C.Her excellent performance in study. D.Her fellow students' encouragement. 5.What do many students think of Khadijah's being homeless? A.It's a really pitiful circumstance. B.It makes her more strong-minded. C.It offers her more ways to succeed. D.It's an excuse about working less hard. 6.What did Khadijah's teachers and advisers help her do? A.Pass a college entrance exam. B.Apply for more advanced education. C.Make a decision to complete high school. D.Become a top student in her current school. 7.Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text? A.Twelve Schools Make a Successful Student B.Being Different Means Having More Chances C.Khadijah Williams: From Shelters to Harvard D.Khadijah Williams: Inspiration to Homeless People C Live with roommates? Have friends and family around you? Chances are that if you're looking to live a more sustainable lifestyle, not everyone around you will be ready to jump on that bandwagon. I experienced this when I started switching to a zero waste lifestyle five years ago, as I was living with my parents, and I continue to experience this with my husband, as he is not completely zero waste like me. I've learned a few things along the way though, which I hope you'll find encouraging if you're doing your best to figure out how you can make the change in a not-always-supportive household. Zero waste was a radical lifestyle movement a few years back. I remember showing my parents a video of Bea Johnson, sharing how cool I thought it would be to buy groceries with jars, and have so little trash! A few days later, I came back with my first jars of zero waste groceries, and my dad commented on how silly it was for me to carry jars everywhere. It came off as a bit discouraging. Yet as the months of reducing waste continued, I did what I could that was within my own reach. I had my own bedroom, so I worked on removing things I didn't need. Since I had my own toiletries (洗漱用品), I was able to start personalising my routine to be more sustainable. I also offered to cook every so often, so I portioned out a bit of the cupboard for my own zero waste groceries. Perhaps your household won't entirely make the switch, but you may have some control over your own personal spaces to make the changes you desire. As you make your lifestyle changes, you may find yourself wanting to speak up for yourself if others comment on what you're doing, which can turn itself into a whole household debate. If you have individuals who are not on board, your words probably won't do much and can often leave you feeling more discouraged. So here is my advice: Lead by action. 8. What do the underlined words "jump on that bandwagon" mean in the first paragraph? A.Share an apartment with you. B.Join you in what you're doing. C.Transform your way of living. D.Help you to make the decision. 9. What was the attitude of the author's father toward buying groceries with jars? A.He disapproved of it. B.He was favorable to it. C.He was tolerant of it. D.He didn't care about it. 10. What can we infer about the author? A.She is quite good at cooking. B.She respects others' privacy. C.She enjoys being a housewife. D.She is a determined person. 11. What is the text mainly about? A.How to get on well with other family members. B.How to have one's own personal space at home. C.How to live a zero waste lifestyle in a household. D.How to control the budget when buying groceries. D Every day people board planes, get on trains and ready themselves for an adventure. But what about the deep sea? Although it covers 70 percent of the Earth's surface, we hardly stop to think of it as a tourist destination. However, the travel industry has made great advancement in creating aquatic(水中的) hotspots. From the luxury to the relatively modest, underwater resorts have been popping up in recent years. For those with a truly adventurous spirit and some money to spend, you can even rent your own submarine. Staffed with a captain, a personal chef and a butler(管家),Oliver’s Travels’ submarine, the Lovers Deep, is a unique getaway. For those looking for a slightly different experience, there is Jules' Undersea Lodge in Florida, US, named after Jules Verne, the author of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Other sectors of the emerging underwater tourism industry have brought a bit of art to the deep sea. According to the BBC, “there's a move to combine underwater tourism with art tourism to attract a new kind of traveler." Underwater museums and exhibits like the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park in Grenada and Australia's Museum of Underwater Art allow visitors to see incredible sculptures in a truly magnificent atmosphere. Underwater archaeological (考古的) sites have also become popular destinations, such as the ones in Turkey, where people can visit sunken cities. Exploring Earth's bodies of water has brought more awareness to the importance of protecting oceans and the animal life that calls them home. British sculptor Jason de Caires Taylor, whose artwork can be seen in multiple underwater attractions around the world, feels this is key. “Most people just see the surface of the ocean and it is hard to think of something so plain and enormous as fragile. We don't regard our oceans as sacred(神圣的)and we should.” 12.What does the underlined expression "popping up" in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A.Appearing suddenly. B.Changing constantly. C.Working properly. D.Moving unexpectedly. 13.Why does the author mention underwater museums and exhibits in Paragraph 3? A.To prove the power of art. B.To explain a new travel rule. C.To introduce a new travel trend. D.To recommend popular destinations. 14.What is the author's attitude towards underwater tourism? A.Neutral. B.Supportive. C.Cautious. D.Disapproving. 15.What can we infer from the last paragraph? A.Enormous resources are there for exploration in the ocean. B.Underwater vacation has brought huge commercial benefits. C.Artists consider it tough to protect underwater environment. D.Underwater travel has a positive effect on ocean protection. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 What is heritage? The word can be difficult to define. Heritage is always something that is passed down by families or other groups for many years. 16 It can also be the customs, traditions, and values shared by groups of people. One way to think about heritage is to break it down into three groups. These are the tangible(有形的), the natural, and the intangible. 17 It can include many human-made objects that hold cultural value. Some examples are national monuments and works of art. Many ancient sites are also part of this group. On a smaller scale, a family home can be part of an individual’s heritage. Many parts of the natural world are also important to cultural heritage. This can include bodies of water, plant life, landforms and more. One example is the Nile River. 18 Efforts to protect natural heritage are key in many cultures. The intangible group includes any part of cultural heritage that you can’t feel through touch. Maybe you’ve read about forms of dance, like Flamenco dancing. You might know about the music of Mariachi Bands or holidays like Eid. These are all examples of intangible heritage. 19 Exploring your own heritage can be fun. It can help you learn about yourself, your family, and your ancestors. But it’s also important to learn about the heritage of others. 20 It can also lead you to find things you may have in common with others! A.They are treasures that can be touched. B.What tangible items can be part of heritage? C.However, heritage isn’t limited to concrete objects. D.Languages, holidays and customs also make the list. E.Therefore, it’s difficult to protect them from fading away. F.Doing so can help you build a stronger understanding of other cultures.
