To a regular person, Spitfire may look like just an ordinary dog, but to fans of the dock diving circuit, he is an incredible athlete in the same league as sport stars like Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant.
Before COVID-19, eight-year-old Spitfire and his 16-year-old owner, Sydney, dominated the dock diving circuit like never before in the history of the sport. If you’re unfamiliar with the sport of dock diving, it’s essentially dogs running on a wooden dock and jumping as far or as high as possible before diving into a pool of water. And no dog did this better than Spitfire. Between 2016 and 2019, he broke 21 world records.
Spitfire came into the Mackey family in 2013. Back then, he was just an adorable dog with big eyes that Sydney instantly fell in love with. Sydney and her mother learned about dock diving in 2016, from a family friend who encouraged them to try it with Spitfire. In May of that year, they decided to give the sport a try and their pet proved to be a natural.
It wasn’t long after that very first jump that Sydney and Spitfire started making waves in the world of dock diving. They took the sport by storm and they dominated events across the United States like no team had ever done before. In three year’s time, they broke many world records, and became known as an unbeatable pair of players.
Before he jumps into the air, the world’s best dock diver reaches a speed of about 30 miles per hour, and when he takes to the air he can reach a distance of 31 feet before hitting the water, or 8 feet 6 inches when he’s going for height. It’s no wonder they call him the flying dog.
But while Spitfire is undoubtedly the star of the show, most dock diving experts are convinced that despite his athletic abilities, he would have never reached his true potential without his young owner’s guidance. Sydney’s “Ready? Ready? Go, Go, Go!” pep talk to get Spitfire fired up has become famous on the dock jumping circuit.
24.Why are Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.To show Spitfire owns the same number of fans.
B.To show Spitfire’s incredible talent in basketball.
C.To show the importance of sports stars to the league.
D.To show Spitfire’s excellent performance in sports.
25.At first, what inspired Sydney to try the dock diving with Spitfire?
A.His friend’s encouragement. B.His devotion to the dock diving.
C.Spitfire’s good performance in diving. D.The popularity of the dock diving.
26.What can we learn about the dog and bis owner from the fourth paragraph?
A.They didn’t perform well at the beginning.
B.They were ever defeated by other teams.
C.They achieved impressive results in the events.
D.They seldom participated in the events in US.
27.What do most experts think of Spitfire?
A.He can’t live up to the title of sports star.
B.He doesn’t obey his owner’s orders at times.
C.Sydney’s guidance contributed to his achievements.
D.They doubt whether he has his athletic abilities.

For thousands of years, Chinese writers have travelled all over the country to take down notes about the geographical conditions of each city. Among them, well-known Chinese geographer and writer Li Daoyuan, in the Northern Wei Dynasty (386-534), composed his book, Commentary on the Water Classics, after studying the original literary version, Water Classics. He later expanded the river records to 1, 252 from the original 137.
The book is now being studied again by Professor Li Xiaojie and his team from Fudan University. They have been using drawing software and 3D modelling to recreate the waterway situations on a map based on the book description. So far, they have completed research on four rivers.
“Ancient people knew really well how to apply the power of nature to technical considerations,”Li said, giving the example of Qianjin’e, one of the most famous ancient water conservation projects in Luoyang, Henan. In order to lead the river into the city for irrigation (灌溉) in ancient Luoyang, the officials built a canal branch by separating a northwest-southeast river. However, the canal water wasn't enough to support the citizens in dry seasons. To solve that, on the northern side of the canal branch, the officials built a reservoir (水库) and a channel to lead the water to the canal branch, where the waterways would converge and flow together to the city.
In Commentary on the Water Classics, a total of 2, 800 cities are recorded with details. Still, the process of recreation takes much effort. After doing a lot of text analysis and fieldwork, the team has gradually created the model with 3D modelling software based on repeated deductions (推论).
For Professor Li, the book is not only a record of the natural landscape over 1, 000 years ago, but also a detailed description of humanity and culture and a treasure for today’s reference.
28.What can we learn about the book Commentary on the Water Classics?
A.It has been out of date. B.It is based on previous studies.
C.It keeps records of 137 rivers. D.It explains 3D modelling.
29.What does the underlined word “converge” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Join. B.Pass. C.Cross. D.Begin.
30.What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about model recreation?
A.Its successful application. B.Its detailed analysis.
C.Its complex process. D.Its major problems.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.3D Technology Fuels Modern Research.
B.A Famous Writer of Chinese Ancient Classics.
C.An Effective Approach to Model Recreation.
D.Ancient Classics Inspire Modern Research.

Since 2006, when Corning, an American glassmaker, developed Gorilla Glass to give Apple’s first iPhone a scratch-resistance (防划) screen, many other types of toughened glass have also appeared for use in handsets. But as well-made as they are, people keep cracking and breaking them. Jingwei Hou, at the University of Queensland in Australia, thinks he has found a way to prevent that.
Dr Hou and his colleagues are among a number of researchers working on a group of materials called perovskites (钙钛矿). The original perovskite, calcium titanium oxide (CaTiO3), is a mineral discovered in the Ural Mountains in 1839 and named after Count Lev Perovski, a Russian mineralogist.
Since then, the name has come to be used for a number of materials that share a similar crystal (晶体) structure.
Much of the interest in perovskites comes because those which combine metal atoms with chlorine, bromine or iodine —members of a group of elements called halogens (卤素) —are semiconductors, which are a solid substance that allows some electricity to pass through it. This makes them potentially useful in a variety of electronics. In particular, one promising feature of metal halides (卤化物) is that they can be used to make new types of solar cells which are much better at turning sunlight into electricity than the silicon-based (硅基) cells currently employed. Oxford PV, a British company, is bringing some of the first perovskite solar cells to market.
Dr Hou and his colleagues have found another important use of the materials. Their study, which was published recently in Science, showed that perovskite screens were efficient light emitters (发光体) able to produce sharp, bright images. Meanwhile, the screens were extremely tough and highly flexible. “Perovskite screens might be unbreakable,” believes Dr Hou. “They can be used not just for phones, but also for products ranging from televisions and computers to lighting.” But he does believe it could take five to ten years of development before this will happen. In the meantime, people should take a bit more care with the screens on their devices.
32.What problem are the researchers trying to solve?
A.How to make phone screens tough enough.
B.How to further reduce Gorilla Glass’s weight.
C.How to better prevent scratches on screens.
D.How to lower the cost of toughened glass.
33.What can we learn about perovskites?
A.They were discovered over 200 years ago.
B.They are a class of materials with a similar structure.
C.They are widely available in the Ural Mountains.
D.They were named by an Australian scientist.
34.Which of the following is a use of metal halides?
A.Replacing semiconductors.
B.Making solid substances flexible.
C.Producing high-efficiency solar cells.
D.Extending the life of silicon-based cells.
35.What does Dr Hou think of perovskite screens?
A.They break easily in cold weather.
B.They will soon come onto the market.
C.They are highly sensitive to bright sunlight.
D.They may be used in various electronic devices.
