used.1.2Thisexaminationguidemaybeusedonavoluntarybasisorwhenspecifiedintheinquiry,contract,ororderandwhenmutuallyagreeduponbythemanufacturerandthepurchaser.1.3ThisStandardPracticeincludes the examinationofpressurecontainingcastings and forgings.2.DEFINITIONS 2.1PressureContainingPiece-A piece whose failure wouldpermit the containedfluid toescape to the atmosphere.Forvalvesthebodyandbonnet(cover)andendpieces(ofmulti-piecevalvebodies,e.g.,ball valves)shall be 2.2Indication-Adetectablemagneticparticleaccumulationresulting from a distortion of examinedbythemagneticparticlemethod.Examinationmayoccurpriortomachiningoraftermachiningatthemanufacturersoption.Thisstandard practice may also be examinationshallbeinaccordancewithASTME709.Forforging,theexaminationproceduresandpersonnelqualificationrequirementsshallbeinaccordancewithASTMA275/A275M.4.ACCEPTANCE STANDARDS AcceptanceStandardsformagnetic particle indicationsshall be as shown in Table 1.5.REFERENCE PHOTOGRAPHS 5.1 Typical Magnetic Particle Indications are shown in ASTM E 125,Reference Photographs for Magnetic ParticleIndicationsonFerrousCastings.5.2IndicationsofwelddiscontinuitiesillustratedinASTME125aremerelyexamplesofdiscontinuitesinweldrepairsandnotdegreeof severity.5.3 The ten examples of falseindicationsandmagneticanomaliesillustratedinASTME125arenecessaryasaguidetothetypeofindicationsandnotnecessarilyindicativeofanyconditionsconcerningintegrityorusefulnessunderthescopeofqualityhereindefined.Itisrecognizedthatinsomeinstancessurveys by methods other thanmagneticparticleexaminationmay be necessary toestablishwhatindicationsbelongtothese categories.6.REMOVAL AND REPAIR OF DISCONTINUITIES 6.1Partsrejectedthroughtheapplicationofthesestandardsmayberepaired.Ifweldingisrequired,it shall be in accordancewiththerequirementspecifiedintheapplicablesteelcastingorforging specifications.6.2Discontinuitiesinexcessofthoserepresentedbyacceptableindicationsshallberemovedbysuitablemeans.Ifremovalofsurfacediscontinuitiestoanacceptable level does not result inreducingthewallthicknessbelowtheacceptableminimum,theareashallbeblendedsmoothlyintosurroundingsurface.Whereremovalofdiscontinuitiesresultsinawall thickness below the acceptableminimum,theresultantcavitymayberepairedbywelding.Weldedareasshallbeblendedsmoothlyinto surrounding surface.6.3Areaswhichasaresultofmagnetic particle examination,havebeenweldrepairedorfromwhichdiscontinuitieshavebeenremovedwithoutrequirementforweldrepair,shall be re-examined by themagnetic particle
