They didn’t realize at that time how their handwritten letters would change their lives. It all began as a school task. Everyone in Caitlin’s class was supposed to choose a pen friend from another country. All the other kids picked countries like France or Germany, but Caitlin chose Zimbabwe because the name sounded exotic(异国的) and cool. Martin lived with his family in one of Zimbabwe’s worst slums(贫民窟) where they shared one room with another family. And a bed was their only piece of furniture. When Caitlin’s first letters reached Martin, they were simple and general. The two kids wrote about their favorite music and what they liked to do. But as Martin gradually revealed more about his life and his letters started arriving written on pieces of trash, Caitlin realized what the living conditions were like for Martin. Without telling her parents, she began sending money with her letters—$ 20 at a time. While the money was not much to Caitlin, it meant more food for Martin’s family and enabled him to pay his school fees. It lasted six years from their first exchange of letters to Martin’s arrival in the United States. With the help of the money from Caitlin’s parents later on, Martin finished his university and got his MBA from Duke University. Today, Caitlin and Martin aren’t only best friends, but they also share their story in a book called I Will Always Write Back. They want to encourage readers to look beyond their own lives and do something kind for others, which might greatly influence their lives. 1. is from Zimbabwe? B.Martin lived a very hard life in one of the worst slums in Zimbabwe. C.Martin’s family could get more food with Caitlin’s money in the letters. D.They had kept writing to each other for five years before Martin arrived in the US. 5.Which would be the best title for this passage? A.The Two Pen Friends B.The Power of Writing C.The Special School Task D.The Money in Letters 【答案】 1.C 2.B 3.C 4.D 5.A 【分析】 这篇短文讲述的是12岁的美国女孩Caitlin和14岁的津巴布韦男孩Martin偶然地成为了笔友,他们之间的通信维持了很多年,还改变了彼此的生活。 1. In 1997,12-year-old American girl Caitlin and 14-year-old Zimbabwean (津巴布韦人) Martin became pen friends through their schools. But as Martin gradually revealed more about his life and his letters started arriving written on pieces of trash, Caitlin realized what the living conditions were like for Martin. Caitlin chose Zimbabwe…. When Caitlin’s first letters reached Martin…With the help of the money from Caitlin’s parents later on, Martin finished his university and got his MBA from Duke University….Today, Caitlin and Martin aren’t only best friends, but they also share their story in a book called I Will Always Write Back. It lasted six years from their first exchange of letters to Martin’s arrival in the United States. Without telling her parents, she began sending money with her letters—$ 20 at a time. While the money was not much to Caitlin, it meant more food for Martin’s family and enabled him to pay his school fees. 因此A选项The Two Pen Friends点明了文章的主要人物,切合文章的内容,故应选A。 It seems that a cat and a mouse just can’t get along well. Cats always like to catch mice. When a mouse meets a cat, the mouse will try to run away as fast as possible. Once upon a time, on a sunny fall afternoon, a young mouse ran around for fun under a tall tree by himself. He kicked up a small piece of rock. The rock went up to the air then dropped down hitting a baby cat. The baby cat was only a few weeks old. She looked at the mouse and said to herself, “He must have lots of power because he could kick up a piece of rock to hit me.” She felt scared. It made the young mouse very proud. He told his friends, the other mice, “Everybody says that a mouse is afraid of a cat, but today a cat was afraid of me.” So the mouse said that he would not run away any more. His friends explained that it was just an accident. The baby cat was too young to know a mouse. When the baby cat grew up to become a big cat, it would be different. So the other mice advised the young mouse that he must still run away when he saw a cat. But the self-important mouse would not take the advice. One year later, the baby cat grew up and became a big cat. One day, under the same tall tree, when the big cat showed up, all the mice ran away except the young mouse. He remained staying there without moving. In another minute, the most stupid mouse was killed by the cat without realizing the reason. 6.On a sunny fall afternoon, went up to hit a baby cat. A.a tall tree B.a piece of rock C.a young mouse D.a large stone 7.The young mouse was very proud because . A.the mouse caught the cat B.the cat was afraid of him C.the mouse kicked up a rock D.the cat ran away at once 8.The other mice advised the young mouse to when he saw the cat. The rock went up to the air then dropped down hitting a baby cat. It made the young mouse very proud. He told his friends, the other mice, “Everybody says that a mouse is afraid of a cat, but today a cat was afraid of me.” So the other mice advised the young mouse that he must still run away when he saw a cat. One year later, the baby cat grew up and became a big cat. One day, under the same tall tree, when the big cat showed up, all the mice ran away except the young mouse可知,一年以后,猫和那只小老鼠又见面了。故应选B。 10. 故选A。 三 Read the following form carefully, and you may find something useful.
