INTERVIEW WITH STUDIO BYCOLOR IN JAPAN:EXPLORING THE ATTRACTION OF COLOR AND MATERIAL专访日本 STUDIO BYCOLOR 设计工作室:探索色彩与材料的吸引力“The purpose of color in any design form is to communicate and convey a message. And materials represent respect for the people, space, and environment.”“无论以怎样的设计形式呈现,色彩的目的都是传达某种特定信息,而材料则呈现了创作者对人、空间和环境的尊重。”Among the Gold-Award winners of DFA Design for Asia Awards 2022,a design studio that focuses on color and material research stands out. This design studio is STUDIO BYCOLOR in Tokyo,Japan.STUDIO BYCOLOR was founded in 2013 by Japanese designer Kaori Akiyama.Since its inception,STUDIO BYCOLOR has been focusing on color and material research and application, which may be due to Kaoris work experience:After graduating from Chiba University in 2002 with a degree in design,Kaori began her career at ITOKI CORPORATION,a well-known office furniture manufacturer in Japan. As a pioneer in color schemes in the industry,ITOKI has been working with the studio of Italian design master Clino Trini Castelli, who developed the idea of CMF in the 80s.As a result,Kaori, who has worked for ITOKI for ten years, has accumulated a wealth of experience in product development and design,as well as developing color schemes. Then Kaori decided to expand her scope of creative practice by joining Samira Boons design studio in the Netherlands which is known for creating“Textile Architecture”.Being influenced by the unconventional creative methods of Dutch design and Samiras many iconic works,Kaori discovered the significance of manufacturing that originates from materials.Based on above two important work experiences,Kaori Akiyama founded STUDIO BYCOLOR and has been dedicated to finding meanings and effects that colors and materials have on people.During her continuous material experimentation,Kaori found that she could use the material“tree”to create a variety of elegant and beautiful jewelry, interior accessories, clocks and watches, etc.,and thus established the interior product brand INHERENT:PATTERN.Meanwhile, she also established MATERIAL IN TIME,a material display platform dedicated to introducing Japans excellent materials to the world.Up to now,MATERIAL IN TIME has already held two exhibitions in Hong Kong,China. With unique and inspiring natural beauty created through in-depth exploration and experimentation with color and materials,STUDIO BYCOLORs works have won numerous design awards, including the Good Design Award Japan,German Design Award,Design Intelligence Award China,to name just a few.In addition,STUDIO BYCOLORs works have been exhibited at various exhibitions in Japan,as well as at international exhibitions such as Salone del Mobile Ventura Lambrate(Milan)and more. So,how does Kaori Akiyama decide the colors and materials for different products and brand designs? What excellent Japanese materials is MATERIAL IN TIME dedicated to introducing? What has been the biggest difficulties, challenges, and gains in creating INHERENT:PATTERN products from wood? How are these products selling? With these questions in mind,Package&Design conducted an exclusive interview with Kaori Akiyama,Founder of STUDIO BYCOLOR,and selected some exceptional design works of STUDIO BYCOLOR to share with our readers. Kaori
