Institute of Early American History and Culture atWilliamsburg.Dr.Appleby has been elected to the AmericanPhilosophical Society and the American Academy of Arts andSciences,and is a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy.Alan Brinkley,Ph.D.,is University Provost and Allan NevinsProfessor of History at Columbia University.His published worksinclude Voices of Protest:Huey Long,Father Coughlin,and theGreat Depression,which won the 1983 National Book Award;TheEnd of Reform:New Deal Liberalism in Recession and War;TheUnfinished Nation:A Concise History of the American People;andLiberalism and its Discontents.He received the Levenson MemorialTeaching Prize at Harvard University.Albert S.Broussard,Ph.D.,is Professor of history at Texas A&MUniversity.Before joining the Texas A&M faculty,Dr.Broussard wasAssistant Professor of History and Director of the African AmericanStudies Program at Southern Methodist University.Among his publi-cations are the books Black San Francisco:The Struggle for RacialEquality in the West,19001954 and African American Odyssey:TheStewarts,18531963.Dr.Broussard has also served as president ofthe Oral History Association,has chaired the nominating committee ofthe Organization of American Historians,was the Texas A&MUniversity Distinguished Lecturer for 19992000,and received a dis-tinguished teaching award from the College of Liberal Arts.James M.McPherson,Ph.D.is George Henry Davis Professor Emeritus of American History at Princeton University.Dr.McPherson is the author of 13 books about the Civil War era.These include Battle Cry of Freedom:The Civil War Era,for whichhe won the Pulitzer Prize in 1989,and For Cause and Comrades:Why Men Fought in the Civil War,for which he won the 1998Lincoln Prize.He is a member of many professional historical associations,including the Civil War Preservation Trust.Donald A.Ritchie,Ph.D.,is Associate Historian of the UnitedStates Senate Historical Office.Dr.Ritchie received his doctorate inAmerican history from the University of Maryland after service inthe U.S.Marine Corps.He has taught American history at variouslevels,from high school to university.He edited the ExecutiveSessions of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations(the McCarthy hearings)and is the author of several books,including Doing Oral History;Reporting From Washington:TheHistory of the Washington Press Corps;and Press Gallery:Congress and the Washington Correspondents,which received theOrganization of American Historians Richard W.Leopold Prize.Dr.Ritchie has served as president of the Oral History Association andas a council member of the American Historical Association.The National Geographic Society,founded in 1888 for theincrease and diffusion of geographic knowledge,is the worldslargest nonprofit scientific and educational organization.Since itsearliest days,the Society has used sophisticated communicationtechnologies,from color photography to holography,to
