about geography literacy and education.Dr.Bednarz was an author of Geography for Life:National Geography Standards,1994.In 2005 she received the prestigious George J.Miller Award from the National Council for Geographic Education.Marci Smith Deal is the K12 Social Studies Curriculum Coordinator for Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District in Texas.She received the 2000 Distinguished Geographer Award for the State of Texas,and was one of the honorees of the 2001 National Council for Geographic Education Distinguished Teacher Award.She has served as president for the Texas Council for Social Studies Supervisors and as vice-president for the Texas Council for Social Studies.She currently serves as a teacher consultant for National Geographic Society.Ins M.Miyares is professor of geography at Hunter College-City Univer-sity of New York.Born in Havana,Cuba,and fluent in Spanish,Dr.Miyares has focused much of her scholarship on Latin America,immigration and refu-gee policy,and urban ethnic geography.She holds a Ph.D.in geography from Arizona State University.In 1999 Dr.Miyares was the recipient of the Hunter College Performance Excellence Award for excellence in associate professor in the School of Education at Boston University,where he teaches methods of instruction in social studies.Dr.White has written and spoken extensively on the importance of civic education,both in the United States and overseas.He has worked in Russia since 1997 on curriculum reform and teacher preparation in education for democracy.Dr.White has received numerous awards for his scholarship,including the 1995 Federal Design Achievement Award from the National Endowment for the Arts,for the Teaching with Historic Places project.In 1997,Dr.White taught his Models of Teaching doctoral course at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito,Ecuador.Middle School Teacher ConsultantJudith K.Bock earned a B.A.in Elementary Education and an M.A.in Geography and Environmental Sciences from Northeastern Illinois Univer-sity.She taught as a middle school educator in gifted education for 33 years and is currently an adjunct geography professor in college geography depart-ments in metropolitan Chicago.Ms.Bock serves on several local,state,and national geography education committees,writes geography lesson plans and curriculum,and facilitates geography workshops
