Alabamas Standards for Citizenship.The standards identify what you shouldknow,understand,and be able to do as aresult of your schooling.We have includedthe standards on pages AL6AL10.Take timeto read over the standards with your teacherand family.Then outline steps that you cantake to help you achieve the standards bothin and outside the classroom.In addition,be aware that there is anAlabama Direct Assessment ofWriting.It focuses on the studentsability to clearly and coherentlyrespond to writing prompts.Thistest is given in grades 5,7,and 10.Studentsare given one hour to respond to promptsthat come in the form of descriptive,narra-tive,expository,or persuasive writing.Thestudents are assessed on a criterion-basedscale that ranges from Level IDoes not meetstandard to Level IVExceeds standard.As part of graduation requirements,Alabama students must pass the AlabamaHigh School Graduation Exam.This exam ismade up of tests in five subjects:Reading,Language,Mathematics,Science,and SocialStudies.You will have several opportunitiesto pass the Alabama High School GraduationExam,beginning in the 10th grade.Eventhough the exam is years away for you,it isan important part of your education.You canfind the standards and objectives for theexam that are covered in the text on pagesAL13AL15.Read the standards andbecome familiar
