British Standard reproduces verbatim IEC 61513:2001 and implements it as the UK national standard.This standard has adopted a presentation format similar to the basic safety publication BS IEC 61508 with an overall safety life-cycle and a system life-cycle.It provides an interpretation of the general requirements of BS IEC 61508 for application to the nuclear power sector,particularly Instrumentation and Control Systems important to safety.This Standard does not contain requirements for software applications in the nuclear power sector;these are provided in BS IEC 60880.It should be noted that the nuclear industry manages the risk assessment and related matters of BS IEC 61508,Part 1 by following IAEA Safety Guides,which place greater emphasis on risk reduction through reducing the probability of hazards and their consequences.The UK participation in its preparation was entrusted to Technical Committee NCE/8,Reactor instrumentation,which has the responsibility to:A list of organizations represented on this committee can be obtained on request to its secretary.From 1 January 1997,all IEC publications have the number 60000 added to the old number.For instance,IEC
