Design and Implementationof an IEC 61850 gateway forPLC SystemsJonas LidnMaster ThesisStockholm,Sweden 2006XR-EE-ICS 2006:021Abstract This master thesis presents the result of an investigation and testing of IEC 61850 introduction into Vattenfall Vattenkraft ABs technical systems for turbine controllers. The work started with an investigation of todays automation products with focus on station bus communication.Today Vattenfall Vattenkraft AB are modernising their automation products in many of their hydro power plants, and the turbine controllers are developed by SwedPower AB on standard PLCs from Siemens Automation and Drives. Therefore the product focus has been PLC systems from Siemens for compatibility with the modern turbine controller used today. The initial investigation provided a few alternatives for how to implement and test an IEC 61850 interface for turbine controllers, one of these alternatives were selected for implementation and tested regarding communication on the station bus and for a few data values. The report describes the implementation and the results of the testing.Today there are no PLCs capable of communicating in accordance to IEC 61850,the interface implemented and tested during this master thesis work provides an interface based on an industrial PC gateway for PLCs to communicate using the IEC 61850 standard. Keywords IEC 61850,PLC,Simatic S7,AX-S4 MMS,Gateway.Preface This technical report is the result of my master thesis work that has been conducted on Vattenfall Utveckling AB.The supervisors for this work are Mr.Anders Johnsson from Vattenfall Utveckling AB and Mr.Lars Nordstrm from the department of Industrial Information and Control Systems at the Royal Institute of Technology.Mr Per-Anders Nordlander from Vattenfall Vattenkraft AB and Mr Henrik Wiechel from SwedPower AB have given many valuable opinions and implementation help regarding the functions and testing of the IEC 61850 interface. This report is in first hand written for people with knowledge of the electric power industry already familiar with the many terms used in substations and hydro power plants.Readers not introduced to the standard of IEC 61850 are recommended to read Appendix 1-IEC 61850 after the initial chapter of IEC 61850 found in chapter 3.1.I hope that all readers find it valuable and interesting.Stockholm,06-03-28 Jonas Lidn
