COMMISSIONDIAGRAMS,CHARTS,TABLESPart 1:Definitions and classificationFOREWORD1)The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by Technical Committees on which all theNational Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express,as nearly as possible,an internationalconsensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.2)They have the form of recommendations for international use and they are accepted by the National Committees in thatsense.3)In order to promote this international unification, the IEC expresses the wish that all National Committees having asyet no national rules, when preparing such rules, should use the IEC recommendations as the fundamental basis for theserules in so far as national conditions will permit.4)The desirability is recognized of extending international agreement on these matters through an endeavour to harmonizenational standardization rules with these recommendations in so far as national conditions will permit. The NationalCommittees pledge their influence towards that end.PREFACEThis Recommendation has been prepared by IEC Technical Committee No.3,Graphical Symbols.Technical Committee No.3 has established a great number of Recommendations containing graphical symbols for useon diagrams in the field of electrotechnology(see IEC Publication 117,Recommended Graphical Symbols). After havingcovered most of the needs for graphical symbols, with the exception of those for new fields of electrotechnology still underconsideration,Technical Committee No.3 found it advisable to supplement the symbol publications with Recommendationsfor the preparation of diagrams. These Recommendations will include:definitions and classification of diagrams, charts and tables;guiding principles for useand combination of graphical symbols;guiding principles for preparation of diagrams;guiding principles for supplementingor replacing diagrams by charts and tables;item designation, etc. These Recommendations will be published separately under the general heading of I E C Publication 113,Diagrams,Charts,Tables.This Publication forms Part 1 of this series. It is a revision of Publication 113(1959),the following modificationshaving been made:1)Tables will in future replace diagrams and charts to an increasing extent. They have therefore been given more emphasisin the text and are mentioned in the title.2)Some of the alternative terms appearing in Publication 113 have been omitted,e.g.elementary diagram, terminalconnection diagram and one-line representation.3)Some terms have been replaced by new ones,e.g.schma de raccordement aux bornes by schema des bornes,repre-sentation rassemble by reprsentation assemble, reprsentation semi-developpe by reprsentation rangee andseparated representation by detached representation.4)Two concepts have been inserted,i.e.location diagram or table and equivalent circuit diagram.5)A number of definitions have been clarified and some renumbering of clauses has been necessary. The work on this revision was started in March 1968 and,as a result of the meeting held in London in 1968,a draft wassubmitted to the National Committees for approval under the Six Months Rule in March 1969.The following countries voted explicitly in favour of publication of Part 1:Definitions and classificationSECTION ONE-GENERAL1.ScopeThe purpose of this Recommendation is to define and to classify diagrams, charts and tables usedin electrotechnology in order to explain functions or show connections and to give informationfor manufacture, installation and maintenance. Two kinds of classification have been adopted:a)classification according to purpose;b)classification according to method of representation.Note.-In practice, the type of diagram is determined by its purpose, the method(s)of representation being chosenfor convenience.2.Definitions2.1 DiagramA diagram may show the manner in which the various parts of a network, installation, group ofapparatus or items of an apparatus are interrelated and/or interconnected.2.2 ChartA chart(U.S.A.:graph)may show the interrelation between:a)different operations;b)operations and time;c)operations and physical quantities;d)the states of several items.2.3 TableA table replaces or supplements a diagram or a chart.SECTION TWO-CLASSIFICATION ACCORDING TO PURPOSEThe main classifications are:a)explanatory diagrams(Clause 3);b)explanatory charts or tables(Clause 4);c)wiring diagrams or wiring tables(Clause 5);d)location diagrams or tables(Clause 6).3.Explanatory diagramsExplanatory diagrams are intended to facilitate the study and understanding of the functioningof an installation or equipment.Three types are defined as follows.
