J.Geogr.Sci.2023,33(4):741-759DOI:https://doi.org/10.1007/s11442-023-2104-z©2023SciencePressSpringer-VerlagUtilizationeffectofwater-landresourcesundertheevolutionofChinesedietarypatternsZHUYuanyuan1,WANGZiwei1,*ZHUXiaohua21.KeyLaboratoryofGeographicProcessAnalysis&SimulationHubeiProvince,CentralChinaNormalUni-versity,Wuhan430079,China;2.InstituteofGeographicSciencesandNaturalResourcesResearch,CAS,Beijing100101,ChinaAbstract:Exploringtheutilizationeffectofwater-landresourcesundertheevolutionofdietarypatternsisofgreatsignificanceinachievingsustainableglobalfoodconsumptionandtheeffectiveallocationofnationalresources.OurselectedstudyareawasChina,acountrywithrapidlychangingdietaryconsumptionpatterns,andtheresearchperiodwasbetween1987and2020.BasedonthematerialcalledChineseDietaryGuidelines2021,thisstudyintro-ducedthe“virtualwater”andthe“virtualland”toquantifytheutilizationeffectofwater-landresourcesundertheevolutionofChinesedietarypatterns.Resultsshowedthatthedietarypatternsgraduallychangedfrom“cereal-vegetable-basedconsumption”to“diversifiedcon-sumption”.Foodconsumption’stotalwaterfootprint(WF)increasedfrom471.1Gm3in1987to848.8Gm3in2020,withagrowthrateof80.2%.Moreover,thetotallandrequirementforfood(LRF)increasedfrom88.8Mhain1987to129.9Mhain2020,withagrowthrateof46.3%.Furthermore,themeatconsumptionwasthemajorcontributortotheincreaseintotalWF(104.0%)andLRF(102.1%).Incontrasttothebalanceddietpattern,therewasnowasteofwater-landresourcesconsumptionforthefoodconsumptionofurban-ruralresidentsinChinabetween1987and2020.However,theconsumptionofwaterresourceswouldgradu-allyapproachtheresourcecostunderthebalanceddietpatterns.Itwouldeventuallybreakthroughthecriticalvalueandreachthestateofresourcewaste.Inaddition,thefindingsshowedthaturbanresidents’wasterateofwater-landresourcesformeatconsumptionin-creasedby142.3%comparedwiththatin1987.Theresearchresultscanprovidescientificguidanceforresolvingthefoodcrisisunderthesupplyofwater-landresourcesinChinaandhaveanessentialrefere...
