The thesis will provide a new view to translation study and new exercise and thought to the translation practice. The opening speech of BFA is a text with high seriousness, so the native and formal expressions will help foreigners better fully understand Chinese culture. The thesis analyzes the translation skills and strategies on lexical features, syntax features and discoursal features of opening speech of BFA based on functional equivalence theory. The first part mainly describes the background, aim, research questions and the expected result. The second part mainly describes the present situation and the relevant studies of the opening speech of BFA and the functional equivalence theory. The third part mainly describes the theoretical framework of the thesis. The theoretical research will be described in details and what the functional equivalence theory has contributes to the translations is also included. The fourth part mainly describes the case study and explore the further understanding in terms of vocabulary, syntax and discourse. The fifth part mainly summarize the whole thesis result, review the research questions and come up with the conclusion. The research finds that, the politics of opening speech of BFA requires many translation of terminology and proper nouns. In lexical features, the main method usually use literal translation, omission, addition and word formation; In syntax features, the main method can be active voice to passive voice, adding subject, and positive sentence to negative sentence. In discoursal features, the cohesion is the main method. The choice of cohesion should match with the style of text. The opening speech of Boao Forum for Asia (referred to BFA) is a text of authority which contains many terminology, so the translation of the speech of BFA in each year is worthwhile to study. This chapter also introduces Nida’s functional equivalence theory which can assist to analyse the usage of words, sentences and paragraphs. The deep understanding of functional equivalence theory can help translate speech of BFA better for further study. 1.1 Background of the study The functional equivalence theory is put forward by Eugene Nida. The theory contains two aspects: formal equivalence and functional equivalence. The formal equivalence means that the translation and the original text should express the same meaning and the choice of words should be natural and native. The functional equivalence means that when readers read the translation, they can feel the same emotion as the original text gives to them.
