Designation:F207314Standard Test Method forNon-Destructive Short Circuit Testing of a MembraneSwitch1This standard is issued under the fixed designation F2073;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This standard establishes a test method for detectingunwanted electrical shorts in a membrane switch.1.2 Since this is a non-destructive test,it can be performedon a membrane switch that is going to be mounted and used inits intended environment.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Terminology2.1 Definitions:2.1.1 shortunwanted electrical connection between twotest points having a resistance lower than the specified opencircuit resistance.2.1.2 membrane switcha momentary switching device inwhich at least one contact is on,or made of,a flexiblesubstrate.2.1.3 specified open circuit resistanceminimum allowableresistance as measured between two test points that,if lowerthan, will indicate an electrical short.2.1.4 test pointan electrical input or outpoint connectionon the membrane switch.3.Significance and Use3.1 Destructive and non-destructive tests characteristicsmust be evaluated to ensure the membrane switch will operateand survive the application it was designed for.It is not feasiblefor all tests to be performed on each membrane of a productionlot. However, there are some non-destructive tests that must beperformed on each switch assembly to ensure 100%function-ality and checking each i/o point for unwanted electricalcontinuity to any other i/o point is one of these characteristics.4.Apparatus4.1 Electrical Tester, capable of measuring the electricalresistance between two test points.4.1.1 Electrical Tester must be capable of detecting a shortwhen a resistance is measured between any of the test pointsthat is less than the specified open circuit resistance.4.1.2 Since this is a non-destructive test, the applied voltageshould not exceed the specified voltage selected appropriately.5.Procedure5.1 Pretest Setup:5.1.1 Connect test points of the switch assembly to theElectrical Tester.5.1.2 Adjust test voltage source as necessary.5.1.3 Adjust threshold resistance to the specified opencircuit resistance.5.2 In-Process Test:5.2.1 Test first test point for shorts between all other testpoints and record results.5.2.2 Test second test point for shorts between all other testpoints and record results.5.2.3 Repeat until all test points are checked between allother test points.6.Report6.1 Report the following information:6.1.1 Specified voltage,6.1.2 Specified shorts resistance,6.1.3 Shorts found,6.1.4 Test points associated with each short,and6.1.5 Resistance value of each short.7.Keywords7.1
