Designation:F256806(Reapproved 2012)An American National StandardStandard Test Method forMeasurement of Sleeping Bags1This standard is issued under the fixed designation F2568;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.INTRODUCTIONThe measurements introduced in this test method are for the internal girth, internal length and width, and external length and width of sleeping bags. The external length and width measurements or internal length and width measurements apply tolength and width measurements required for standardized Bedding Labels. The“girth”(that is,internal circumference)of a sleeping bag refers to the total internalcircumference at specific longitudinal measurement points of a closed sleeping bag.It is a physicaldimension/measurement used for specifications, design, and quality control.Girth in and of itself isnot to be used to predict thermal properties of a sleeping bag.1.Scope1.1 This test method determines the internal girth, theinternal length and width, and the external length and width ofa sleeping bag under a standardized measurement method.1.2 The measurement uses a physical measurement methodapplicable to any location where a flat level surface isprovided.1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Terminology2.1 Definitions:2.1.1 bookends, ntwo moveable panels on the externalmeasurement apparatus that slide in and out on the two axis ofthe sleeping bag.2.1.2 foot, nthat end of the sleeping bag designed for thefoot of the human body.2.1.3 girth, ntotal internal circumference of a closedsleeping bag as measured while the bag is lying flat on a flatlevel surface.2.1.4 head, nthat end of the sleeping bag designed for thehead and neck of the human body.2.1.5 lengthsee below:2.1.5.1 Option 1external length, nof a sleeping bag, greatest external distance from the head to the foot as measureddown the centerline of the sleeping bag and parallel to theplane of the surface of the measurement apparatus while thesleeping bag is in a relaxed state.2.1.5.2 Option 2internal length, nof a sleeping bag, distance from the liner/shell seam at the head of the sleepingbag to edge of the zipper coil at the foot of the sleeping bag asmeasured parallel to the centerline of the sleeping bag andparallel to the plane of the surface of the measurementapparatus, while the sleeping bag is open on a flat level surface. For a mummy sleeping bag this measurement is not possible;use Option 1.2.1.6 sleeping bag, nstructure made of down, syntheticfiberfill, shell fabrics,or other materials,or a combinationtherof, that are designed for people to use for thermal protec-tion when sleeping(for example,outdoors,tent,cabin).2.1.7 walls, nstationary sides along the length and widthof the apparatus.2.1.8 widthsee below:2.1.8.1 Option 1external width, nof a sleeping bag, greatest distance from one external edge to the oppositeexternal edge,as measured perpendicular to the axis created bythe length and parallel to the plane of the surface of themeasurement apparatus, while the sleeping bag is in a closed, relaxed state.2.1.8.2 Option 2internal width, nof a rectangular sleep-ing bag, distance, divided by 2,from the edge of one zipper1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F08 on SportsEquipment,Playing Surfaces, and Facilities and is the direct responsibility ofSubcommittee F08.22 on Camping Softgoods.Current edition approved May 1,2012.Published August 2012.Originallyapproved in 2006.Last previous edition approved in 2006 as F2568 06.DOI:10.1520/F2568-06R12.Copyright ASTM International,100 Barr Harbor Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959.United States1 coil to the opposite zipper coil edge,as measured perpendicularto the axis created by the length and parallel to the plane of thesurface of the measurement apparatus, while the sleeping bagis open on a flat level surface. For a mummy sleeping bag, thegirth measurement divided by two.3.Significance and Use3.1 In this context, this test can be used for specifications, design, and quality control.Girth in and of itself is not to beused to predict the thermal properties of a sleeping bag.4.Apparatus4.1 Four-Way Rule(for girth measurements)A measuringdevice that will measure two linear distances that are perpen-dicular of each other. It must have sufficient length and widthto span all sleeping bags to be measured.A purpose-builtdevice may be used,or a combination of common structures assimple as retractable metal tape measures. The longer o
