Designation:F203105(Reapproved 2014)An American National StandardStandard Test Method forMeasurement of Arrow Shaft Static Spine(Stiffness)1This standard is issued under the fixed designation F2031;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the formulation and designationof arrow spine measurement standards and nomenclature forarrow shafts.1.2 The English system of measurement, specifically inchesof deflection, shall be used for all spine values expressed for agiven arrow shaft.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Terminology2.1 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:2.1.1 arrow spinethe deflection of the shaft, measured ininches,in a three-point load scenario where a specified mass isapplied to the midpoint of the arrow shaft supported at a fixedspan.2.1.2 spine around shaft variationspine variation betweenfour readings taken at 90 spacing around the shaft.2.1.3 static spinestiffness of the arrow shaft at rest on aspine measurement device.3.Significance and Use3.1 This test method is intended to provide a stable industrystandard by which benchmarks and comparisons can be madeby manufacturers and consumers.3.2 This test method is intended to clarify and define arrowspine or stiffness as it pertains to the archery industry and sport.4.Measurement Guidelines for Arrow Spine4.1 Arrow Spine MeasurementThe most prevalent andcommonly accepted method of measuring arrow shaft spineinvolves supporting the arrow shaft along a known, fixed span, and using an indicator device while the arrow shaft is deflectedwith a known weight depending from or pressing upon thearrow shaft at the exact center between the supports for theshaft. For this test method,a span type measurement is to beused. The length of the arrow shaft to be tested, the spandistance to be used, and the equipment to be used are definedas follows:4.1.1 Shaft Length The shaft length to be used forstandard spine measurement is the span distance plus 1 in.toallow for axial travel during deflection.4.1.2 Span Distance The length of the span to be used forthis test is 28 in.(71.1 cm).For those shafts that aremanufactured less than 29 in.(73.7 cm)in length, the spandistance to be used is 23 in.(58.4 cm).4.1.2.1 Span=28 in.(71.1 cm)for shafts longer than 29 in.(73.7 cm).4.1.2.2 Span=23 in.(58.4 cm)for shafts shorter than 29 in.(73.7 cm).4.1.2.3 Approximate conversion formula to convert a spineat 23 in.(58.4 cm)span to a 28 in.(71.1 instances where thisis not practical due to shaft design, the manufacturer shalldisclose the measurement location(s)from an identifiabledatum on the shaft.4.1.4 Measurement EquipmentMeasurement equipmentmay involve the use of dial indicators, probe indicators, andlaser gauging devices.4.1.4.1 Mechanical IndicatorsIn the case of mechanicalindicators, probe pressure should be limited to no more than0.176 oz(5 g).4.1.4.2 Noncontact Gauging EquipmentNoncontact gaug-ing equipment, such as laser gauging equipment, shall read towithin 0.001 in.of mechanical contact measurement equipmentconforming to the test methods and specifications outlinedherein.4.1.5 Span Support PointsSupport points shall allow freeaxial travel of the shaft as the shaft is deflected duringmeasurement.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F08 on SportsEquipment,Playing Surfaces, and Facilities and is the direct responsibility ofSubcommittee F08.16 on Archery Products.Current edition approved Sept.1,2014.Published November 2014.Originallyapproved in 2000.Last previous edition approved in 2010 as F2031 05(2010).DOI:10.1520/F2031-05R14.Copyright ASTM International,100 Barr Harbor Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959.United States1 4.1.5.1 Span Support Point ConfigurationThe shaft sup-port point shall have a maximum diameter of 0.125 in.(3.175mm)at the point of contact with the arrow shaft.4.1.6 Test Description The arrow shaft shall be deflectedby a 1.94 lb(880 g)weight at the center of the span.Theweight may depend from or rest upon the shaft. The differencebetween the position of a given datum at the center of the shaftand the position of the same datum during deflection shall bethe shaft spine value. The reading shall be taken within 30 s toprevent plastic deformation of the shaft material from affectingthe readings.4.2 Measurement Ac
