Designation:F55813An American National StandardStandard Test Method forMeasuring Air Performance Characteristics of VacuumCleaners1This standard is issued under the fixed designation F558;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year of originaladoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.Anumber in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers procedures for determining airperformance characteristics of commercial and householdupright,canister,stick,hand-held,utility,and combination-type vacuum cleaners having provisions for attaching a hoseand incorporating a series universal motor. This test methodcan be applied to the carpet cleaning mode of operation.1.2 These tests and calculations include determination ofsuction, airflow, air power, maximum air power, and inputpower under standard operating conditions(see Note 1).Thenozzle mounted on plenum testing is an ideal air performancemeasurement and is not intended to represent the actual airperformance during carpet or floor cleaning.NOTE1For more information on air performance characteristics,seeRefs(1-6).21.3 The foot-pound-inch system of units is used in thisstandard. The values in parentheses are given for informationonly.1.4 This standard may involve hazardous materials, operations, and equipment. This standard does not purport toaddress all of the safety concerns,if any, associated with itsuse. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard toestablish appropriate safety and health practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.Aspecific precautionary statement is given in Note 2.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:3E1 Specification for ASTM Liquid-in-Glass ThermometersE177 Practice for Use of the Terms Precision and Bias inASTM Test
