designation F 965;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision,the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of Defense.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers critical dimensions and con-siderations for the junction of any blade and any handle of ahook-on type laryngoscope to allow engagement,lamp illumi-nation,and disengagement through multiple cycles.An elec-trical lamp is fixed to the blade and supplied with energythrough the handle.1.2 This standard does not cover:(1)the blade form orhandle design beyond the interchangeability aspects of theconnection between the blade and the handle;(2)the measure-ment and specificiation of the lamp illumination intensity;and(3)disposable,flexible,or fiber-illuminated laryngoscopesdesigned for surgery.1.3 The state-of-the-art of laryngoscope performance doesnot permit sufficient reproducibility to allow inclusion ofmandatory force values in this Tolerances23.Terminology3.1 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.1.1 bladea separate rigid device to provide direct visionof the larynx,incorporating a hook-on base and a socketconnection for a laryngoscope lamp and an electrical connec-tion to the hook-on end.3.1.2 contactsconductive components of the hook-on fit-tings,both handle and blade,which come together to make anelectrical circuit when the handle and blade are in the locked,operating position.3.1.3 engagementthe blade and handle are engaged whenthe hinge pin is positioned against the closed end of the hingeslot,and remains coupled in all positions.3.1.4 folded positionthe position of the engaged bladewhen the tip of the blade is as close as possible to the handle.3.1.5 handlea separate,rigid device which is held in thehand during use,containing the hook-on connection thatretains the blade and supplies electrical energy for the lamp.3.1.6 hingethe mechanical feature of the handle and bladethat allows them to be engaged and disengaged.The hinge alsoallows the blade to be placed into the operating,folded,and allintermediate positions while engaged.3.1.7 hinge pinthe component of the handle that insertsinto the blade hinge slot.3.1.8 hinge slotthe surfaces of the blade hook-on fittingthat engage the hinge pin.3.1.9 locking mechanismthe feature that retains the bladehook-on fitting in the operating position.3.1.10 locking slotsthe surfaces of the handle hook-onfitting that accept the locking surfaces of the blade hook-onfitting.3.1.11 locking surfacesthe components of the blade lock-ing mechanism that fit into the locking slots to resist the bladedisplacement from the normal operating position.3.1.12 operating positionthe position of the engagedblade and handle when the lamp is lit and the instrument isready for use.3.1.13 retainerthe surface,component,or feature of theblade hinge slot that retains the blade hook-on fitting to thehandle hinge pin.The retainer maintains the engagement of theblade in the operating,folded,and all intermediate positions.3.1.14 seating surfacesthe surface or surfaces of the bladehook-on fitting that contact the handle hook-on fitting tosupport the blade in the locked operating position.4.Significance and Use4.1 The primary objective of this specification is to ensureinterchangeability concerning mechanical fit and
