Designation:F217914Standard Specification forAnnealed Soda-Lime-Silicate Glass Containers That AreProduced for Use as Candle Containers1This standard is issued under the fixed designation F2179;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers the minimum requirements forannealed soda-lime-silicate glass containers when the producerknows the containers are to be used as candle containers.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory requirements prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 Reference to these documents shall be the latestrevision, unless otherwise specified by the authority applyingthis specification.2.2 ASTM Standards:2C148 Test Methods for Polariscopic Examination of GlassContainersC149 Test Method for Thermal Shock Resistance of GlassContainersC162 Terminology of Glass and Glass ProductsC224 Practice for Sampling Glass ContainersF1972 Guide for Terminology Relating to Candles andAssociated Accessory Items3.Terminology3.1 For definitions of glass and glass products terms used inthis specification, refer to Terminology C162.3.2 For definitions of candle related terms used in thisspecification, refer to Guide F1972.4.Performance Requirements4.1 Annealing:4.1.1 Transparent GlassContainers examined under po-larized light in accordance with Test Methods C148 shall, afterannealing, show no greater than real temper number 4.Thisperformance requirement will also apply to containers that arefurther processed(such as ceramic enamel decorations),fol-lowing the original manufacture,by reheating the containerabove the strain point and cooling to room temperature.TheScratch Test(Section 5)can be used as an alternative to TestMethods C148.Containers tested in accordance with theScratch Test shall show no fractures.4.1.2 Non-transparent GlassIf glass condition(color, decoration, etc.)prohibits sufficient light transmission for useof Test Methods C148,annealing shall be qualified through theuse of the Scratch Test(Section 5).Containers tested inaccordance with the Scratch Test shall show no fractures.Thisperformance requirement will also apply to containers that arefurther processed(such as ceramic enamel decorations),fol-lowing the original manufacture,by re-heating the containerabove the strain point and cooling to room temperature.4.2 Thermal Shock:4.2.1 Containers shall not crack or break when tested, withthe water retained in the container from the first immersionthrough the second immersion,at a thermal shock temperaturedifferential(T)of 50C(90F)during continuous productionin accordance with Test Method C149.4.2.2 Containers shall be tested at a thermal shock tempera-ture differential(T)of 50C(90F)during lot sampling inaccordance with Practice C224.5.Test Methods5.1 ScopeThis Scratch Test Method is designed to ensurethat residual stress is reduced to a commercially acceptablelevel in annealed soda-lime-silicate glass containers that areintended for use as candle containers. It provides an alternativemethod to Test Methods C148.Two methods of performing theScratch Test are covered:5.1.1 Test Method AScratch Test using a tungsten carbidescribe,5.4.2.1,and5.1.2 Test Method BScratch Test using fifty-grit emerypaper/cloth,5.4.2.2.NOTE1Independent test results showed no significant statisticaldifference between using tungsten carbide scribe and fifty-grit emerypaper/cloth.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F15 onConsumer Products and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee F15.45 onCandle Products.Current edition approved Jan.15,2014.Published February 2014.Originallyapproved in 2002.Last previous edition approved in 2013 as F2179 Significance and UseThis test method can be used inthe quality control of soda-lime-silicate glass candlecontainers, where the degree of annealing must be verified toensure quality products. This procedure can be used whereglass cannot be read by polariscope(color, decoration, etc.)oras an alternative method for transparent glass containers.5.3 SamplingMethods of sampling for a group of contain-ers of a given type are given in Practice C224 for annealing.5.4 Test Procedure:5.4.1 Allow the ware to cool evenly thro
