Designation:F235605a(Reapproved 2013)Standard Specification forProduction Acceptance Testing System for Lighter-Than-AirLight Sport Aircraft1This standard is issued under the fixed designation F2356;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers production acceptance testrequirements for the manufacture of lighter-than-air light sportaircraft.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Terminology2.1 Definitions:2.1.1 airshipengine-driven lighter-than-air aircraft thatcan be steered.2.1.2 balloonlighter-than-air aircraft that is not engine-driven,and that sustains flight through the use of either gasbuoyancy or an airborne heater,or both.2.1.3 lighter-than-air aircraftaircraft that can rise andremain suspended by using contained gas weighing less thanthe air that is displaced by the gas.2.1.3.1 DiscussionAirships may include dynamic lift thatderive as much as 30%lift from other than buoyancy.3.Significance and Use3.1 The purpose of this specification is to provide theminimum requirements for the establishment of a ground andflight test program for verifying the initial(first run)productionaircraft meets certain operational performance requirement thathave been set forth by the manufacturer in its AircraftOperating Instructions.3.2 In addition, this specification provides minimum re-quirements to verify that each subsequent production aircrafthas no obvious defects that would prevent the safe operation ofthe aircraft.3.2.1 Every production aircraft shall be flight tested to thefollowing minimums:3.2.1.1 Lighter-than-Air AirshipsFifteen minutes flighttime, including at least one takeoff and landing, trimming offlight controls, and verification of control for left turn, rightturn, ballonet systems(if installed),vectoring systems(ifinstalled),and instrument/indicator operation.3.2.1.2 Hot Air BalloonsFifteen minute static inflation atgross load/ambient temperature, including operational tests ofall vents, valves, burner operation, and suspension system.3.2.1.3 Gas/Hybrid(GasThermal Type)BalloonsAirpressurized inflation to manufacturers maximum in-flightenvelope pressure, including operational tests of all valves, controls, and so forth.Suspension systems will be static testedby suspending at gross load to verify all suspension compo-nents.3.3 Post Flight Acceptance:3.3.1 There shall be a written procedure in effect to performpost flight inspection that will review all flight critical attach-ments and structures.3.3.2 The reviewing personnel shall sign all post flightreview documents.3.4 DocumentationThere shall be a written procedure ineffect to properly document and store the production accep-tance test results such that they are correlated to the specificaircraft for future reference.3.5 Test FailuresThere shall be a written procedure ineffect to review the causes for any aircraft failures in theproduction acceptance tests phases.Aircraft may only bereleased for retest after manufacturing review of the discrepantarticles and written release for retest.4.Production Acceptance Testing,Ground Testing4.1 Inspection VerificationThere shall be a written proce-dure in effect to verify all top-level inspections have beencompleted and no discrepancies remain open.4.2 Engine Break-inThere shall be a written procedure ineffect to perform the engine break-in.This procedure mayinclude all engine gage verification of operation. All enginereadings shall achieve the normal accepted range of readingscommensurate with a new engine. If not performed during1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F37 on LightSport Aircraft and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee F37.60 on Lighterthan Air.Current edition approved June 1,2013.Published September 2013.Originallyapproved in 2004.Last previous edition approved in 2010 as F2356 performed underseparate procedures. All engine gages shall be verified to beoperating.4.3 Instrument VerificationThere shall be a written proce-dure in effect to verify that all other instruments are operatingwithin normal ranges. If equipped with a compass, the compassvariation card data shall be developed with the engine running.5.Keywords5.1 Aircraft Operating
