Designation:F314618Standard Test Method forImpact Attenuation of Turf Playing Systems Designated forRugby1This standard is issued under the fixed designation F3146;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This standard establishes a test method to be used whentesting a synthetic turf fields impact attenuation property forassessing its suitability for rugby.1.2 The surface being tested will be located indoors oroutdoors and typically includes the entire surface, both withinthe boundary lines of the playing area and outside of it.Wherenon-turf surfaces exist within these areas, they shall beexcluded from the scope of this standard, unless they arecovered either permanently or temporarily with synthetic turf.1.3 It is acceptable to use this test method, whereappropriate,as a test method for laboratory based testing ofsynthetic turf surfaces.1.4 The definition of a minimum performance requirementfor this test method is outside of the scope of this standard.Where reference is made to a minimum requirement this isintended for demonstration and clarification purposes only.1.5 This test method establishes a method of reporting testresults.1.6 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard.Where values are given in parenthesis they aremathematical conversions to inch-pound units that are pro-vided for information purposes only and are not consideredstandard.1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.8 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2F355 Test Method for ImpactAttenuation of Playing SurfaceSystems,Other Protective from which a surface is estimated tomeet the impact attenuation performance criterion specified.3.2.3 critical time value,nt2 t1where t1and t2are theinitial and final times(in seconds)of the interval during whichHIC attains maximum value.3.2.4 drop height test, nthe combined drop test(s)per-formed at one specific drop height(see Fig.1).3.2.5 drop test, nan individual drop of the E missile(asdefined in Test Method F355)at a test point, where the drop hasbeen performed and recorded in accordance with prescribedmethodology(see Fig.1).3.2.6 head injury criterion(HIC),nweighted impulsecriterion calculated from a head impact acceleration-timeprofile and used to quantify head impact severity. The HIC1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F08 on SportsEquipment,Playing
