Designation:F 2127 01An American National StandardStandard Test Method forTreestand Adherence1This standard is issued under the fixed designation F 2127;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the procedures for determiningthe adherence of treestands relative to the manufacturers ratedcapacity.1.2 The values stated are in inch-pound units and are to beregarded as standard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Terminology2.1 The terminology and definitions in the referenced docu-ments are applicable to this test method.2.2 Definitions:2.2.1 backbar or V-barthe adjustable component of aclimbing treestand or handclimber that engages the tree toprovide support. The backbar may be rigid or flexible.2.2.2 climbing treestanda treestand that provides both themeans to ascend the tree, and allow the user to remain at adesired elevation.2.2.3 handclimber,or climbing aida device to assistclimbing with a climbing treestand.A structure that allows theuser to support his weight when lifting a climbing treestandwith his legs.2.2.4 non-climbing,fixed position or hang-on treestandatreestand that is secured to the tree at the elevation where it isused.(The user usually ascends the tree by some means andthen lifts the treestand to the desired position and secures it foruse.)2.2.5 platformthe horizontal structural area of a treestandon which the user stands and/or places his feet.2.2.6 treestanda device designed to be affixed to a tree orits branches so as to permit an individual to sit or stand thereonfor the purpose of attaining an elevated position from which toobserve, photograph or hunt.3.Summary of Test Method3.1 A climbing treestand is mounted so that its platform isperpendicular to a wooden or metal pole when its rated load isapplied parallel to the mounting pole,at selected points.Afixedposition stand shall be mounted with the platform perpendicu-lar to the mounting poles. The platform is equipped withdeflection measurement devices. The load is applied,at theselected points and recordings are made of the deflection ateach point unless the test subject moves from its initial positionor until permanent deformation or yielding occurs.3.2 In addition, for climbing treestands only the test given in3.1 is duplicated except that the treestand platform is notperpendicular to the mounting pole, but at an angle approxi-mately 15-20 such as that used in ascending or descending atree.4.Significance and Use4.1 This test method is intended for quality assurance andproduction control purposes. This test method is not intendedto be an independent material or product-acceptance test.5.Apparatus5.1 Asolid, rigid, wooden or metal pole, preferably vertical,is used to mount the subject product such that pole deflectionis minimized.5.1.1 The mounting pole diameter shall be 10 in.(254 mm),6 1 in.(25.4 mm).5.2 The load shall be applied using either calibrated weightsor a mechanical device in conjunction with a calibrated loadcell.5.2.1 The use of calibrated weights requires that weightplacement be accurate to assure that the load applicationcentroid is coincident with the boundaries defined and meetsthe requirements as given in 5.3.1 and in 5.4.3.Caution shouldbe exercised for operator protection with the use of weights incase of slippage or premature failure.5.2.2 The use of a mechanical device such as a tensiletesting machine or hydraulic power,in combination withpulleys, fulcrums or bearing to redirect forces, requires the useof a calibrated load cell attached adjacent to the test subject toaccount for friction losses.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F08 on SportsEquipment and Facilities and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee F08.16 onArchery Products.Current edition approved June 10,2001.Published August 2001.1Copyright ASTM International,100 Barr Harbor Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959,United States.5.3 Calibrated deflection measuring devices(such as dialindicators or optical laser)shall be used to measure movementof the test subject under load. The accuracy of the measuringdevices shall be at within 0.010 in.(0.254 mm)and repeatablewithin 0.005 in.(0.127 mm).The devices shall measuremovement parallel to the direction of the applied load and shallbe mounted in such a manner to eliminate deflection of the testapparatus and be placed,as a minimum,as follows:5.3.1 There shall be at least four platform deflection mea-surements taken when the load is applied.5.3.1.1 One measur
