immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision,the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers fabrication details for fixed,vertical,steel ladders for personnel access on ships.1.2 Nonferrous ladders and special-purpose ladders areexcluded from this specification.1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas the standard.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any,associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices structure or equipment.3.2 pitchthe included angle between the horizontal andthe ladder,measured on the opposite of the ladder from theclimbing side.3.3 vertical laddera ladder which has an installed pitchrange from 75 to 90(vertical).4.Classification4.1 Ladders are furnished in three types as follows:4.1.1 Type INormal duty(Fig.1).4.1.2 Type IIPunched stringers(Fig.2)as an alternate toType I.4.1.3 Type IIIHeavy duty(Fig.3).This type may bespecified in cargo holds where the cargo or equipment orvehicles used to handle cargo could be expected to damage aType I or Type II ladder.5.Ordering Information5.1 Orders for material under this specification shall includethe following:5.1.1 Quantity,5.1.2 Type(4.1),and applicable detail in Fig.2,5.1.3 Material(6.1),5.1.4 Finish(8.2),5.1.5 Dimensions a and b and L(Fig.1,Fig.2,or Fig.3),5.1.6 Number of rungs,5.1.7 Welding specification(6.2),5.1.8 Marking(Section 10),and5.1.9 ASTM designation and date of issue.6.Materials and Manufacture6.1 Unless otherwise specified in ordering documents,steelshall conform to the requirements of Specification A 36/A 36M,ABS Section 43.3,or equal.6.2 Unless otherwise specified in ordering documents,welding shall conform to AWS D 1.1 or ABS Section 30.7.Dimensions7.1 The dimensions shall be in accordance with Figs.1-3.7.2 Dimensions are given in inches with metric conversionin parentheses.8.Workmanship,Finish,and Appearance8.1 Ladders shall be free of splinters,sharp edges,burrs,andweld spatters.8.2 FinishUnless otherwise specified in ordering docu-ments,ladders shall,after fabrication,be sand or shot blasted toremove rust and scale and given a complete coat of zincchromate primer,Federal Specification TT-P-645.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F25 on Shipsand Marine Technology and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee F25.03 onOutfitting and Deck Machinery.Current edition approved Dec.1,2003.Published January
