professionals associated with this techni-cal organization. It all began in 1993,when at the invitation of ASTMs Scott Mur-phy,I and my colleagues on ASTMs Technical and ProfessionalTraining team developed the first Phase I Environmental Site As-sessment Training Course.Since then,by teaching the classthroughout the United States and throughout the world,we allenjoyed and continue to enjoy the opportunity to share a wealth ofenvironmental knowledge, practical experiences, and helpful busi-ness information with each other and our students. The experience was broadened further when we developed thePhase II Environmental Site Assessment Course, which was com-pleted in February of 1999 and has been offered by ASTM sincethen on a monthly basis.Because of the natural progression andclose relationship of the two Standards, several of the instructorsnow teach both courses. It was during the development of thePhase II Course that I first conceived the idea of a manual based onthe principles of the two Standards, but which would also addressmany of the issues brought up during the classroom sessions.Withthe encouragement and support of my colleagues,I set out to fulfillthat dream. The first edition of this manual was published in 1999.In 2002 Icompleted the work with Mr.Shunichi Kamewada on a translationof the manual into Japanese, and I subsequently visited Japan onseveral occasions to train Japanese instructors in a number ofASTM Standards. In recent years with the advent of EPA Brownfields Programs andrelated legislative developments a number of changes evolved inthe industry that drove the need to revise the ASTM Standards andthe necessity to edit and update this manual.Mr.John Worlund, aseasoned professional and trainer in the Standards and active par-ticipant in the ASTM standardization process graciously agreed toco-author this edition. Many of the examples in the book are based on actual experiencesof the instruct
