interim results of the World-Wide Variability of Seawatersstudy.Over the past decade or more many papers have been presented concerning degradationof metallic materials in natural or nearly natural waters.Symposia have been sponsored bygroups involved in Off Shore Technology,Pipelines,Petroleumand Natural Gas,Water-works Associations,Nuclear Waste Storage, and other specialized interest areas.Unfortu-nately,some worthwhile research tends to slip through the cracks between these areas andnot be presented. This symposium has offered a receptacle for a varied collection of research presentationsin a timely fashion and should thus be of value to the corrosion community.Well deserved thanks go to W.W.Kirk as cochairman of this symposium and one of thepresenters,to the other authors and presenters, and to the reviewers who devoted much timeand effort to these thankless tasks.Calvin H.BalounStocker Center 180,Chemical Engineering,Ohio University,Athens,OH 45701;symposium for Testing and Materials,Philadelphia,1990,pp.2-36.ABSTRACT:A world-wide test program was undertaken by Task Group G 1.09.02.03 to assessthe relative corrosivity of seawater at 14test sites.Aluminum alloy A95086,copper-nickel alloyC70600,and carbon steel alloy KOl50lspecimens were prepared at one location, shipped tothe various sites, and returned to the original site for final evaluations. Results obtained throughthree years of testing indicate that average corrosion behavior was generally within limits ofpreviously published results.Individual site characteristics have been identified, however, thatcan have a profoundeffect on test results.Even when the ASTM standard test method wasprescribed, variations affecting corrosion results became evident. In reality there is no naturalseawater environment,as identified to date,in which to test materials. The final fiveyear resultsare yet to be collected, but the cooperation of all program participants has contributedmuchtoward accomplishmentof the objectives.Still, more frequent and broader monitoring of sea-water variables at the
