Designation:F149215An American National StandardStandard Specification forHelmets Used in Skateboarding and Trick Roller Skating1This standard is issued under the fixed designation F1492;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision,the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers performance requirements forhelmets to be used in the activities of skateboarding and trickroller skating.1.2 All testing and requirements of this specification shallbe in accordance with Test Methods F1446,except where notedherein.1.3 Partial utilization of this specification is prohibited.Anystatement of compliance with this specification shall be acertification that the headgear meets all of the requirements ofthe specification in their entirety.A headgear that fails to meetany one of the requirements of this specification is consideredto have failed the specification,and shall not be sold with anyindication that it meets parts of the specification.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard.No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any,associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2F1446 Test Methods for Equipment and Procedures Used inEvaluating the Performance Characteristics of ProtectiveHeadgear3.Terminology3.1 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.1.1 trick roller-skating,naggressive roller skating usingquads or in-lines and involving such things as jumping,slidingsideways,or skating on ramps or stairs.3.1.2 in-lines,nroller skates with all wheels on each skatearranged along a single longitudinal line.3.1.3 quads,nroller skates with four wheels on each skatearranged in a rectangular pattern.4.Labels and Warnings4.1 Shall meet the requirements of Test Methods F1446.4.2 Shall have the words“For skateboarding or trick rollerskating”inscribed on one of the interior permanent labels.4.3 Headgear that complies with this and other standardsmay proclaim uses as certified by the manufacturer.5.Marking the Test Line5.1 The test line is shown in Fig.1 and shall be marked inaccordance with Test Methods F1446.6.Conditioning and Number of Samples6.1 Shall be in accordance with Test Methods F1446.6.2 The test requires a minimum of four samples of eachshell/liner combination.7.Retention System Testing7.1 Retention system tests shall be performed before impacttesting.7.2 The ambient helmet shall be subjected to the Roll-OffTest of Test Methods F1446 using a 4 kg drop mass from aheight of 0.6 m.7.3 The retention system shall remain intact and the helmetshall remain on the headform.7.4 The hot,cold,and wet helmets shall be subjected to theDynamic Strength Retention Test of Test Methods F1446 usinga 4 kg drop mass from a height of 0.6 m.7.5 The retention system shall remain intact without elon-gating more than 30 mm.8.Impact Sites and Projections8.1 Impact sites are described in Test Methods F1446.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F08 on SportsEquipment,Playing Surfaces,and Facilities and is the direct responsibility ofSubcommittee F08.53 on Headgear and Helmets.Current edition approved July 1,2015.Published August 2015.Originallyapproved in 1993.Last previous edition approved in 2015 as F1492 08(2015).DOI:10.1520/F1492-15.2For referenced ASTM standards,visit the ASTM website,www.astm.org,orcontact ASTM Customer Service at serviceastm.org.For Annual Book of ASTMStandards volume information,refer to the standards Document Summary page onthe ASTM website.Copyright ASTM International,100 Barr Harbor Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959.United States1 8.2 ProjectionsAny unfaired projection extending morethan 7 mm from the helmets outer surface shall break away orcollapse when impacted with forces equivalent to those pro-duced by applicable impact-attenuation tests in Section 10.There shall be no fixture on the helmets inner surfaceprojecting more than 2 mm into the helmet interior exceptoccipital stabilizers and foam fit pads.9.Impacting Schedule9.1 All impacting shall be performed in accordance withTest Methods F1446,except as noted in 9.4,using the variablemass drop assembly configuration.9.2 The test anvils can be oriented in any horizontal,centered position.9.3 At least one of the four impact sites(as described in TestMethods F1446)on the ambient conditioned helmet will beimpacted three consecutive times with the flat anvil at the sametest location to evaluate the helmets ability to withstandmultiple impacts.A time interval of 90 6 30 s must elapsebetwee
