Designation:F133091(Reapproved 2018)An American National StandardStandard Guide forMetallic Abrasive Blasting to Descale the Interior of Pipe1This standard is issued under the fixed designation F1330;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This guide covers metallic abrasive blasting to descalethe interior of carbon steel pipe.1.2 This guide is recommended for use in conjunction withan abrasive reclamation system.1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to inch-pound units that are provided for informa-tion only and are not considered standard.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.5 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards,Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade(TBT)Committee.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2D2200 and Use3.1 The maximum length and minimum diameter of the pipeshall be determined by the capacity of the blast equipmentused.3.2 This guide is recommended for removing mill scale, rustscale, paints, zincs, and oxides.4.General Requirements4.1 Before blasting, pipe shall be dry and free of slag andweld spatter which would not be removed by abrasive blasting.Pipe shall also be free of loose dust and debris which mighthamper the effectiveness of abrasive blasting.4.2 Abrasive blasting shall be accomplished in a dry areawith the ambient air condition such that condensation does notoccur.4.3 Shot and blasting equipment shall be stored at a tem-perature not less than 13C(10F)above the dew point of thesurrounding area.4.3.1 Abrasive reclamation system shall include a filtrationsystem capable of removing oxides,debris,dust,shot/gritfragments,and fines.4.4 Compressed air system shall be equipped with moistureremoval devices capable of reducing the dew point of the air atthe nozzle to 18C(approximately 0F)or less.4.5 Hoses shall have the maximum practical diameter andshall be as short as possible.4.6 Nozzles shall have the maximum possible aperture asdetermined by the capacity of the blast equipment and aslimited by the pipe diameter.4.7 Internal pipe cleaning nozzle assemblies are commer-cially available and shall be used where required.1This guide is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F25 on Ships andMarine Technology and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee F25.11 onMachinery and Piping Systems.Current edition approved March nozzle assemblies shall includea carriage which is capable of centering the nozzle concentri-cally in the pipe being blasted and a nozzle which is capable ofproducing a consistent 360 blast pattern.4.7.2 Diagrams of some commercially available internalpipe cleaning assemblies are provided in Figs.1-4.4.7.3 If a lance is required,it s
