1040;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision,the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of Defense.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers throw-away,flat panel-typefilter units for use in air conditioning,heating,and ventilatingsystems.This specification also includes panel-type filters withpleated media.1.2 The of the mediumexposed to air flow measured in the plane or planes of themedia,excluding sealing flanges,framing supports,etc.4.Classification4.1 The filters are furnished in two types as follows:4.1.1 Type 1Throw-away frames and media,and4.1.2 Type 2Permanent frames with replaceable media.4.2 The filters are furnished in three grades as follows:4.2.1 Grade AStandard dust-holding capacity,4.2.2 Grade BHigh dust-holding capacity,and4.2.3 Grade CHigh arrestance.5.Ordering Information5.1 Contracts or orders for the units under this specificationshall include the following information:5.1.1 Quantity,5.1.2 Material for media frame for Type 2 filter,(see section6.4.4),5.1.3 Size,(See 7.1),5.1.4 Certification of the filter units by the producer orsupplier,if required,(see Section 10).6.Materials and Manufacture6.1 Filters shall be the manufacturers standard commercialproduct with any added features needed to comply with thespecified requirements.7.Physical Properties7.1 The filter units shall be the flat panel type,with orwithout pleated media.They shall be designed and fabricatedfor disposal when,because of accumulated dust loading,thedust-load limit is reached.In Type 2 filters,the media framesshall be permanent and the media pad only shall be disposable.The filter media shall be dry or adhesive-coated in accordancewith the manufacturers recommendations.7.2 Filter ConstructionFilters shall be constructed with90 corners.Frame edges shall be parallel to within116in.Media pad reinforcement in the form of grilles,retaining grids,fabric netting,or the equivalent shall be installed on both facesof the filter in accordance with the manufacturers recommen-dations.The media shall be attached to the frame of Type 1filters,and supported in the frame of Type 2 filters,in such amanner that the media pad will not slump or otherwise bepermanently displaced under the conditions of maximum airvelocity(350 ft/min(1.78 m/s)and filter resistance specifiedherein.7.2.1 Filter MediaFilter media shall be suitable for theintended use and shall be composed of natural,synthetic,orinorganic fibers,or any combination of such fibers.The mediashall be furnished with theadhesive applied.7.2.2 Media FramesFrames for Type 1 filters shall besuitably formed to provide positive support for the media padand sufficient structural rigidity for normal handling andinstallation.Wood-pulp products used for frame constructionshall be sized to reduce moisture absorptivity.Frames for Type2 filters shall be aluminum or steel,as specified(see 4.1.2),andshall be designed to permit ready removal of the soiled mediapad and replacement with a clean pad.Metal used for Type 2frames shall be corrosion-resistant or shall be suitably plated
