Designation:F1137111Standard Specification forPhosphate/Oil Corrosion Protective Coatings for Fasteners1This standard is issued under the fixed designation F1137;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1NOTE1.1 was editorially corrected in February 2012.1.Scope*1.1 This specification covers the basic requirements for fourgrades of corrosion protection for fasteners.Grade A consistsof a zinc phosphate coating with no additional sealer(dry),Grade B consists of a zinc phosphate coating with a dry organicsealer,Grade C,and Grade D consist of a zinc phosphatecoating with supplemental protective oil type compound.1.2 This specification is intended primarily for fastenerssuch as nuts, clips, washers, and other ferrous threaded andnon-threaded fasteners that require corrosion protection.1.3 These coatings may or may not have a decorative finish.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2B117 Practice for Operating Salt Spray(Fog)ApparatusF1470 Practice for Fastener Sampling for Specified Me-chanical Properties and Performance Inspection3.Classification3.1 The zinc phosphate treatment and subsequent protectivecoatings are classified into four grades according to therequirements shown in Table 1.4.Ordering Information4.1 Orders for material under this specification shall includethe following information:4.1.1 Quantity of parts,4.1.2 Grade required(see Table 1),and4.1.3 Any additions agreed upon between the purchaser andthe supplier.5.Requirements5.1 AppearanceUnless otherwise agreed upon betweenthe purchaser and the producer, the color of the protectivecoating shall be as-coated gray for Grades A,B,C,and D.5.2 Corrosion ResistanceThese coatings shall be capableof withstanding neutral salt spray for the minimum h specifiedin Table 1 with no base metal corrosion on significant surfaces.Significant surfaces on threaded fasteners are defined as theexposed surfaces when the fasteners are installed in a normalmanner(bolt head, nut head,face,etc.).On other surfaceswhere control of the coating cannot be obtained under normalprocessing such as holes, recesses, threads, etc.,the aboverequirements do not apply.5.3 Thread FitThe maximum thickness of coating whichmay be applied to threads on threaded products is limited bythe basic thread size(see 8.2).Threads may be producedundersize/oversize(before coating)to accommodate the coat-ing thickness, providing the finished product(after coating)meets all specified mechanical properties. All undersize/oversize must be within permissible limits as agreed uponbetween the supplier and the purchaser.5.4 Dry-to-TouchGrade C shall be evenly coated anddry-to-touch such that when held with filter paper or equivalentand applying hand pressure for 5 to 10 s,there shall be novisible staining of the filter paper when viewed without use ofsupplementary magnification. For referee purposes, this testshall be performed using a force of 10 N as measured with aload-indicating gage.6.Sampling6.1 The purchaser may request samples in accordance withPractice F1470.7.Test Methods7.1 The corrosion resistance shall be determined in accor-dance with Practice B117.7.2 The coating thickness may be determined by micro-scopic examination of the cross-section taken perpendicular tothe significant surface or by determining the coating mass(g/m2)by a weigh-strip-weigh method and then converting to1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F16 onFasteners and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee F16.03 on Coatings onFasteners.Current edition approved May 1,2011.Published May 2011.Originallyapproved in 1988.Last previous edition approved in 2006 as F1137 00(2006).DOI:10.1520/F1137-11E01.2For referenced ASTM standards, visit the ASTM website,www.astm.org,orcontact ASTM Customer Service at serviceastm.org.For Annual Book of ASTMStandards volume information, refer to the standards Document Summary page onthe ASTM website.*A Summary of Changes section appears at the end of this standardCopyright ASTM International,100 Barr Harbor Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959.United States1 a coating thickness(see Note 1).Coating thickness, for refereepurposes, shall be measured by microscopic examination.NOTE1The weigh-strip-weigh method involves weighing the testspecimen before and after stripping the deposit with a reagent which doesnot attack the base metal. The formula used for measuring the thickness of a deposit bythe weigh-strip-weigh method is:T 5WA 3D3103where:T=thickness,m,W=mass of deposit,g,A=area of deposit,m2,andD=density of coating,kg/m3.8.Inspection8.1 Samples shall be taken in accordance with PracticeF1470.8.2 Referee InspectionThe following referee thread in-spection procedure may be utilized if the specified“go”gagebinds on the screw.8.2.1 B
