Designation:F110402(Reapproved 2013)Standard Test Method forPreparing Aircraft Cleaning Compounds,Liquid Type,WaterBase, for Storage Stability Testing1This standard is issued under the fixed designation F1104;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of the stabil-ity in storage,of liquid,water-base chemical cleaningcompounds, used to clean the exterior surfaces of aircraft.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 U.S.Government Documents:2Federal Specification PPP-P-704 Pails,Metal(Shipping,Steel,1 through 12 Gallons)3.Summary of Test Method3.1 Storage stability is determined by evaluation of theeffect of time, temperature, and environmental conditions onthe cleaning compound.Samples used for testing are filledcontainers taken from the manufacturers controlled productionformulation, packaged and delivered to the purchaser fornormal use.The sample container shall be subjected to thespecified storage environment for a period of 12 months.Thetest shall be completed prior to 24 months from date ofpackaging.4.Significance and Use4.1 This test method determines the procedure to be used toensure the long term storage stability of aircraft cleaning andmaintenance products,in order to ensure their ability to meetthe shelf-life requirements called up in specifications or con-tract documents. The subsequent testing requirements aredetailed in the specification or contract.5.Sampling5.1 The sample for storage stability testing shall be takenfrom a controlled production formula, packaged lot,or batchdelivered in a sealed, filled container to the purchaser for use. This sample is normally a 1 gal can conforming to FederalSpecification PPP-P-704.This material shall have previouslybeen tested and passed all other specification requirements forqualification or acceptance. The sample container selected forthe test shall be kept sealed and unopened for the duration ofthe test. The sample container shall be durably and legiblymarked with the following minimum information:Storage Stability Test SampleSupplierFormula numberDate of packagingCold test periodHot test periodBatch/lot No.Test beganTest ends6.Procedure6.1 Storage EnvironmentPlace the sample container in astorage area where a temperature of 50 to 91F(10 to 33C)ismaintained at least 80%of the total storage test time.Do notsubject the storage test sample to temperature over 150F(66C)or under 10F(12C)during the entire test.Maintainthe sample container in a static condition not subject tovibration, rolling, inversion,or other movement.Movement tothe necessary temperature-controlled area for cold-and hot-temperature testing is excepted, but accomplish such transferwith minimum(or no)disturbance of container contents.6.1.1 Cold-Temperature Storage EnvironmentSubject thesample container to a 15-day time interval 17 6 3F(8 62C).Conduct this cold test interval during the period 90 to120 days after start of the storage stability test time.6.1.2 Hot-Temperature Storage EnvironmentSubject thesample container to a 15-day time interval at 120 6 18F(496 10C).Conduct this hot test interval after 270 days ofelapsed test time but 60 days prior to the termination of thestorage test.6.1.3 Completion of TestAfter 12 months storage test timecarefully remove the sample container(if necessary),without1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee F07 onAerospace and Aircraft and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee F07.07 onQualification Testing of Aircraft Cleaning Materials.Current edition approved Dec.1,2013.Published December 2013.Originallyapproved in 1987.Last previous edition approved in 2008 as F1104 02(2008).DOI:10.1520/F1104-02R13.2Available from Standardization Documents Order Desk,Bldg.4 Section D,700Robbins Ave.,Philadelphia,PA 19111-5098,Attn:NPODS.Copyright ASTM International,100 Barr Harbor Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959.United States1 agitation, rolling,or inversion, from the storage area and placein a room,in a stable location for 48 6 1 h at a temperature of71 to 80F(22 to 27C).At the end of 48 h,remove the top ofthe container and examine the internal surface for corrosion orsediment.Disregard discoloration of the interior surface of thecontainer.Take samples of the product and test in accordancewith the relevant specification or contract requirements.7.Precision and Bias7.1 No statement can be made relating to precision and biassince the only nonvariables are the environmental condition
