Designation:A41108(Reapproved 2013)Standard Specification forZinc-Coated(Galvanized)Low-Carbon Steel Armor Wire1This standard is issued under the fixed designation A411;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of Defense.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers zinc-coated low-carbon steelwire for use in armoring for protection against damage ofsubmarine and underground cables used for communication, control,or power purposes.1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2A90/A90M Test Method for Weight Mass of Coating onIron and Steel Articles with Zinc or Zinc-Alloy CoatingsA938 Test Method for Torsion Testing of WireB6 Specification for ZincE8 Test Methods for Tension Testing of Metallic Materials3.Ordering Information3.1 It shall be the responsibility of the purchaser to specifyall requirements that are necessary for material under thisspecification.Such requirements may include, but are notlimited to,the following information:3.1.1 Quantity of each size,3.1.2 Wire size, diameter in inches or(millimetres)(Section12),and3.1.3 Weight(Mass),inside diameter, and method of band-ing of coils.4.Zinc for Coating4.1 The slab zinc used for the coating shall be any grade ofzinc conforming to Specification B6.5.Base Metal5.1 The base metal shall be manufactured by any commer-cially accepted steel making practice, and of such quality that, when processed and zinc-coated,the finished wire shall havethe properties prescribed in this specification.6.Joints6.1 The wire shall be furnished in coils of one continuouslength.Welds made prior to final wire drawing shall bepermitted.7.Tensile Strength7.1 The zinc-coated wire shall have a tensile strength of notless than 50 000 psi(345 MPa),nor more than 70 000 psi(483MPa).The tensile strength of the zinc-coated wire shall bedetermined in accordance with Test Methods E8.The diameterof the wire shall be measured over the zinc coating for thepurpose of calculating the tensile strength.8.Elongation8.1 The zinc-coated wire shall have an elongation of not lessthan 10%in 10 in.(254 mm)for nominal sizes 0.284 in.(7.21mm)and smaller.Nominal sizes larger than 0.284 in.shall havean elongation of not less than 9%in 10 in.The elongation shallbe determined as the permanent increase in length after failureof a marked section of the wire originally 10 in.in length.9.Torsion Test9.1 The zinc-coated wire shall withstand without fracturethe minimum number of turns specified in Table 1.This testshall be done in accordance with Test Method A938 and thenumber of turns to failure shall meet the requirements of Table1.10.Weight of Coating10.1 The weight of zinc coating,in ounces per square footor(grams per square metre)of uncoated wire surface, shall benot less than that specified in Table 2.10.2 Weight of Coating TestThe zinc coating shall betested for weight by a stripping test in accordance with TestMethods A90/A90M.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee A05 onMetallic-Coated Iron and Steel Products and is the direct responsibility ofSubcommittee A05.12 on Wire Specifications.Current edition approved April 1,2013.Published April 2013.Originallyapproved in 1957.Last previous edition per minute in aclose helix of at least 2 turns around a cylindrical mandrel ofthe diameter specified in Table 3.The zinc coating shall beconsidered as meeting this requirement if,when the wire iswrapped about the specified mandrel, the coating does not flakeand none of it can be removed from the wire by rubbing withfingers.Loosening or detachment during the adhesion test ofsuperficial, small particles of zinc formed by mechanicalpolishing of the surface of zinc-coated wire shall not beconsidered cause for rejection.12.Size and Permissible Variations12.1 SizeThe size of the zinc-coated wires shall be ex-pressed as the diameter of the wire in decimal fractions of aninch or(millimetres).12.2 Permissible Variations
