Designation:B 397 85(Reapproved 1999)Standard Specification forConcentric-Lay-Stranded Aluminum-Alloy 5005-H19Conductors1This standard is issued under the fixed designation B 397;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of Defense.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers concentric-lay-stranded con-ductors,made of round aluminum-alloy 5005-H19(extra-hard)wires,for general use for electrical purposes. These conductorsshall be constructed with a central core wire surrounded by oneor more layers of helically laid wires(Explanatory Note 1 andExplanatory Note 2).1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas the standard, with the exception of resistivity. The SIequivalents of inch-pound units may be approximate.NOTE1The alloy and temper designations conform to ANSI H35.1.Aluminum-alloy 5005 corresponds to unified numbering system alloyA95505 in accordance with Practice E 527.2.Referenced Documents2.1 The following documents of the issue in effect on dateof material purchase form a part of this specification to theextent referenced herein:2.2 ASTM Standards:B 263 Test Method for Determination of Cross-SectionalArea of Stranded Conductors2B 354 Terminology Relating to Uninsulated Metallic Elec-trical Conductors2B 396 conductors usually used in over-head lines.3.1.2 Class AFor conductors to be covered with suitableweather-resistant materials and usually used as line wire or astree wire.4.Ordering Information4.1 Orders for material under this specification shall includethe following information:4.1.1 Quantity,4.1.2 Conductor size:circular-mil area or aluminum 1350equivalent size(Section 7 and Table 1 or Table 2),4.1.3 Class(Section 3),4.1.4 When physical tests shall be made(see 14.2 and 14.4),4.1.5 Package size(see 16.1),4.1.6 Special package marking,if required(Section 17),4.1.7 Heavy wood lagging,if required(see 16.2),and4.1.8 Place of inspection(Section 15).4.2 In addition,Supplementary Requirements shall applyonly when specified by the purchaser in the inquiry, contract, orpurchase order for direct procurement by agencies of the U.S.Government(S2,S3,and S4).5.Joints5.1 Joints may be made in the six outer wires of seven-wireconductors by cold-pressure welding or by electric-butt,cold-upset welding, but not by electric-butt welding.Joints are notpermitted in the finished center wire of seven-wire conductors.5.2 Joints may be made in any of the wires in conductors of19 or more wires by electric-butt welding,cold-pressurewelding,or electric-butt,cold-upset welding.5.3 The minimum distance between a wire joint and anotherjoint either in the same wire or in other wires of the completedconductor shall be as prescribed in Table 3.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee B-1 onElectrical Conductors and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee B01.07
