Designation:B864/B864M13Standard Specification forCorrugated Aluminum Box Culverts1This standard is issued under the fixed designation B864/B864M;the number immediately following the designation indicates the yearof original adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.A superscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope*1.1 This specification covers material, geometric, and wallsection properties of aluminum box culverts manufacturedfrom corrugated plate or sheet, with attached rib stiffeners, forfield assembly.Appropriate fasteners and optional materials, such as aluminum invert plates and headwalls, are alsodescribed.Applications for aluminum box culverts includeconduits for gravity flow drainage of surface water, such asculverts and storm drains,as well as for small bridges andgrade separation structures such as pedestrian or vehicularunderpasses, and utility tunnels.1.2 This specification does not include requirements forfoundations, backfill,or the relationship between earth cover orlive loads and strength requirements. These important designconsiderationsaredescribedintheAASHTOLRFD Bridge Design Specifications and the LRFD BridgeConstruction Specifications.1.3 This specification does not include requirements for thehydraulic design of these structures.Hydraulic design,place-ment of footings or inverts, and end treatments to resist scourare described in FHWA HDS No.5.1.4 Appendix X1 lists nominal dimensions of box culvertsizes commonly available. Also listed are cross-sectional areaand hydraulic design parameters for these sizes.1.5 Appendix X2 lists manufacturers suggested designproperties for the rib stiffener types, spacing classes, andmaterial thicknesses described in this specification.1.6 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system may not be exact equivalents;therefore, eachsystem shall be used independently of the other.Combiningvalues from the two systems may result in non-conformancewith the standard.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2A36/A36M Specification for Carbon Structural SteelA123/A123M Specification for Zinc(Hot-Dip Galvanized)Coatings on Iron and Steel ProductsA153/A153M
