Designation:B68501(Reapproved 2012)Standard Specification forPalladium-Copper Electrical Contact Material1This standard is issued under the fixed designation B685;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision,the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the Department of Defense.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers a 60%palladium-40%copperalloy in the form of rod,wire,strip,and sheet material forelectrical contacts.1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard.The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any,associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to become familiarwith all hazards including those identified in the appropriateMaterial Safety Data Sheet(MSDS)for this product/materialas provided by the manufacturer,to establish appropriatesafety and health practices,and determine the applicability ofregulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2B476 Specification for General Requirements for WroughtPrecious Metal Electrical Contact Materials3.Manufacture3.1 Raw materials shall be of such quality and purity thatthe finished product will have the properties and characteristicsprescribed in this specification.3.2 The material shall be finished by such operations(coldworking,annealing,turning,grinding,or pickling)as arerequired to produce the prescribed properties.4.Chemical Composition4.1 Material produced under the specification shall meet therequirements of chemical composition prescribed in Table 1.4.2 By agreement between purchaser and manufacturer,analysis may be required and limits established for elements orcompounds not specified in the table of chemical composition.5.Mechanical Requirements5.1 The contract or order may specify ultimate tensilestrength,elongation,microhardness(Knoop or Vickers),hard-ness(Rockwell or Rockwell Superficial),or a combination ofthese mechanical properties as temper criterion.If the contractor order does not specify a temper criterion,then the criterionfor temper designation will be ultimate tensile strength andelongation(Table 2).5.2 Mechanical properties shall conform to the listings ofTable 3.5.3 All test specimens shall be full size when practical.5.4 All tests are to be conducted at room temperature,65 to85F(18 to 29C).6.General Requirements6.1 The provisions of Specifications B476 shall apply to allmaterials produced to this specification.7.Inspection and Testing7.1 Material furnished under this specification shall beinspected by the manufacturer as listed below:7.1.1 Visual inspection in accordance with 11.2.1 in Speci-fication B476.7.1.2 Temper test(hardness or tension,but not both).Atension test is recommended for strip below 0.030 in.(0.8 mm)thickness and for wire of any diameter.A tension test ispreferred when permitted by part size and quantity.7.1.3 Dimensional tests.7.1.4 Spectrographic or chemical analysis when indicatedby the purchase order.7.2 The purchaser shall perform such tests as are required toverify the quality of material procured under the specification.8.Keywords8.1 contact alloy;electrical
