Designation:A903/A903M99(Reapproved 2017)Standard Specification forSteel Castings,Surface Acceptance Standards,MagneticParticle and Liquid Penetrant Inspection1This standard is issued under the fixed designation A903/A903M;the number immediately following the designation indicates the yearof original adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.A superscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers acceptance criteria for thesurface inspection of steel castings when nondestructivelyexamined by magnetic particle or liquid penetrant inspection.1.2 This specification is to be used wherever the inquiry, contract, order,or specification states that the acceptancestandards for magnetic particle or liquid penetrant inspectionshall be in accordance with Specification A903/A903M.1.3 The values stated in either inch-pound units or SI unitsare to be regarded separately as standard.Within the text the SIunits are shown in brackets. The values stated in each systemare not exact equivalents;therefore each system must be usedindependently of the other.Combining values from the twosystems may result in a nonconformance with this specifica-tion.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2E165 Practice for Liquid Penetrant Examination for GeneralIndustryE709 Guide for Magnetic Particle Testing3.Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 linear indicationsan indication whose length isequal to or greater than three times its width shall be classifiedas a linear indication.3.1.2nonlinear indicationsan indication whose length isless than three times its width shall be classified as nonlinear.3.1.3 relevant indicationsrelevant indications are indica-tions which result from mechanical discontinuities.Only indi-cations whose major dimension exceeds116in.1.6 mm shallbe considered relevant.4.Ordering Information4.1 The inquiry and order should indicate the followinginformation:4.1.1 Nondestructive PracticePractice E165 for liquidpenetrant inspection or Guide E709 for magnetic particleinspection.Unless a specific technique within a practice isspecified, the choice shall be the option of the manufacturer.4.1.2 Personnel Qualifications:4.1.3 Extent of InspectionThe number of castings and theextent of casting surfaces to be examined.4.1.4 Acceptance LevelIf more than one acceptance levelis specified for different locations,a nondestructive test draw-ing identifying acceptance levels and locations should accom-pany the inquiry and order.4.1.5 Supplementary Requirements,if any.5.Personnel Qualifications5.1 Personnel performing examination shall be qualified inaccordance with an acceptable written procedure as agreedupon between the purchaser and manufacturer.6.Evaluation of Indications6.1 All relevant indications shall be evaluated in terms ofthe acceptance criteria.6.2 Mechanical discontinuities are indicated by bleed-out ofthe penetrant or retention of the magnetic particle examinationmedium. However, false indications may be produced bylocalized surface irregularities, metallurgical discontinuities, ormagnetic permeability variations.Any indication in excess ofthe acceptance criteria which is believed to be false may bereexamined.Surface conditioning may precede reexamination. When agreed upon between the manufacturer and purchaser, the liquid penetrant method may be used to verify the presenceof surface discontinuities which had been previously indicatedby the magnetic particle method.6.3 Broad areas of fluorescence, pigmentation,or particleaccumulation which may mask indications of discontinuitiesare unacceptable, and such areas will be cleaned and reexam-ined.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee A01 on Steel,Stainless Steel and Related Alloys and is the direct responsibility of SubcommitteeA01.18 on Castings.Current edition approved
