Designation:C51404(Reapproved 2014)Standard Specification forNails for the Application of Gypsum Board1This standard is issued under the fixed designation C514;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the U.S.Department of Defense.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers requirements for steel wirenails suitable for use in the application of gypsum board.1.2 Details of construction for a specific assembly toachieve the required fire resistance shall be obtained fromreports of fire-resistance tests, engineering evaluations, orlistings from recognized fire testing laboratories.1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.1.4 The following precautionary caveat pertains only to thetest method portion,Sections 7 and 8,of this specification:Thisstandard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is the responsibility of the userof this standard to establish appropriate safety and healthpractices and determine the applicability of regulatory limita-tions prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2E4 Practices for Force Verification of Testing Machines3.Materials3.1 Steel Wire, used in the manufacture of nails, shall be ofhard-drawn low or medium-low-carbon steel, entirely suitablefor the purpose intended. Before fabrication it shall be suffi-ciently ductile to withstand cold-bending,without fracture, through 180 over a radius not greater than the diameter of thewire(see Section 8).4.Physical Properties4.1 DuctilityThe nail shall be sufficiently ductile to with-stand cold bending without fracture when tested according toSection 8.4.2 Withdrawal ResistanceThe average withdrawalresistance, both immediate and delayed, shall be at least equalto that provided by 12.5 gauge(0.099 6 0.003 in.)(2.515 6 0.08 mm)bright, smooth shank, nails with a mediumdiamond point, when tested according to 8.2.5.Dimensions and Permissible Variations5.1 HeadsShall be not less than 0.2375 in.(6.0 mm)andnot more than 0.3875 in.(9.8 mm)in diameter, shall be notmore than164in.(0.4 mm)thick at the peripheral edge, shall beuniformly tapered to a small fillet around the shank, shall beeither flat or concave, and shall be free from protrusions andsharp, irregular edges.5.2 ShanksDiameter shall not vary more than 6 0.003 in.(0.08 mm)for shank diameters 0.076 in.(1.93 mm)or larger.5.3 PointsThe nails shall have medium to long diamondor needle points.5.4 ClearanceWhere a deformation process producesother than a smooth shank nail,a clearance area(round andsmooth),measured from the top of the head to the deformedsection, shall be provided equal to the nominal thickness of thegypsum board for which the nails are specified.6.Workmanship,Finish,and Appearance6.1 The nails shall be bright,or chemically treated, orcoated with rust inhibiting material provided that such chemi-cal treatment or rust inhibitor does not adversely affect theperformance of the nail as specified in Section 4.The nailsshall also be compatible with the joint compound and decora-tion.Nails shall be neatly formed and free from injuriousdefects or deformations.7.Number of Tests7.1 At least five nails from each lot of 100 individualcontainers shall be examined to determine conformance to therequirements of this specification.1This specification is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee C11 onGypsum and Related Building Materials and Systems and is the direct responsibilityof Subcommittee C11.02 on Specifications and Test Methods for Accessories andRelated Products.Current edition approved Sept.1,2014.Published October 2014.Originallyapproved in 1963.Last previous edition approved in 2009 as C514 04(2009)1.DOI:10.1520/C0514-04R14.2For referenced ASTM standards, visit the ASTM website,www.astm.org,orcontact ASTM Customer Service at serviceastm.org.For Annual Book of ASTMStandards volume information, refer to the standards Document Summary page onthe ASTM website.Copyright ASTM International,100 Barr Harbor Drive,PO Box C700,West Conshohocken,PA 19428-2959.United States1 8.Test Methods8.1 Bend Test:8.1.1 Significance and UseThis test method is performedto determine the ductility of a nail, and used to determinecompliance with this specification.8.1.2 ProcedureHold the test nail in a vise and bend bymeans of a clamp or similar device attached to the free end ofthe nail through 90 over a radius not greater than the diameterof the nail.8.1.3 Precision and BiasNeither the precision nor the biasof the nail bend test have been determined.8.2 Withdrawal Resistance8.2.1 Significance and UseThis test
