Designation:C46714Standard Classification ofMullite Refractories1This standard is issued under the fixed designation C467;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This classification covers refractory products consistingpredominantly of mullite(3 Al2O32 SiO2)crystals that areformed by either converting any of the sillimanite group ofminerals,or synthesizing from appropriate materials in a meltor sinter process.1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2C16 Test Method for Load Testing Refractory Shapes atHigh TemperaturesNOTE1Chemical analysis of refractory products are determined by acombination of x-ray fluorscence(XRF)and inductively coupled plazma(ICP)using standard reference materials(SRM),including various typesof minerals and refractory materials which are available from the NationalInstitute of Standards and Technology and other appropriate sources.C832 Test Method of Measuring Thermal Expansion andCreep of Refractories Under Load3.Significance and Use3.1 The mullite content of an alumina-silica refractorymaterial has an important influence on volume stability, loadbearing properties, and its satisfactory use in refractory appli-cations.This classification is considered useful for purchasespecifications and quality control.4.Basis of Classification4.1 The refractory products falling within the scope of thisclassification are classified by chemical and physical tests tomeet the following requirements:Alumina content,%Impurities,Amax,%Deformation,Bmax,%56 to 7955AImpurities refer to metal oxides other than those of aluminum and silicon.BWhen tested in accordance with 6.1.2.5.Test Specimens5.1 Testing for compliance with this classification shall beperformed on 9 by 412by 212-in.(228 by 114 by 64-mm)rectangular brick as made,or on specimens of this size cutfrom larger shapes, utilizing existing plane surfaces as much aspossible.6.Test Methods6.1 The properties enumerated in this classification shall bedetermined in accordance with the following ASTM meth-ods:6.1.1 Alumina ContentXRF and ICP.6.1.2 Load TestSchedule 6 of Table 1 in Test Method C16.6.1.3 Thermal Expansion and CreepMethod C832.7.Retests7.1 Because of possible variables that may result fromsampling or an unsatisfactory reproducibility of tests bydifferent laboratories, the material may be resampled andretested at the request of either the manufacturer or thepurchaser. This could apply where the first test results may notconform to the requirements prescribed in this classification. Therefore, the final results to be used shall be the average of atleast two series of tests, each of which has been obtained byfollowing the specified testing procedures in detail.8.Keywords8.1 alumino-silicate;classification;mullite;refractories1This classification is under the jurisdiction of the ASTM Committee C08 onRefractories and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee C08.92 on The JosephE.Kopanda Subcommittee for Editorial,Terminology and Classification.Current edition approved Sept.1,2014.Published October 2014.Originallyapproved in 1961.Last previous edition approved in 2008 as C467 97(2008).DOI:10.1520/C0467-14.2For referenced ASTM standards, visit the ASTM website,www.astm.org,orcontact ASTM Customer
