Designation:C106508(Reapproved 2015)Standard Specification forNuclear-Grade Zirconium Oxide Powder1This standard is issued under the fixed designation C1065;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification defines the physical and chemicalrequirements for zirconium oxide powder intended for fabri-cation into shapes, either entirely or partially of zirconia, foruse in a nuclear reactor core.1.2 The material described herein shall be particulate innature.1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2C117 Test Method for Materials Finer than 75-m(No.200)Sieve in Mineral Aggregates by be defined in accordance with TerminologyC859 except for the following:3.2 buyerthe organization issuing the purchase order.3.3 phase transformationthe rearrangement of the atomicordering of a crystalline lattice as a material is cycled througha critical transformation or inversion temperature. The changefrom one crystalline phase to another may be accompanied bya volume change that could lead to cracks or defects inproducts fabricated from such materials.3.4 powder lota specified quantity of zirconium oxidepowder(with stabilizing additive,if applicable)blended to-gether such that samples taken in accordance with the proce-dures of Section 8 can be considered as representative of theentire specified quantity.3.5 sellerthe zirconium oxide processor.3.6 stabilizing additivea material which, when added insufficient quantity to the subject material exhibiting the phasetransformation, produces a stabilized crystalline phase thatdoes not undergo a transformation at any temperature withinthe expected fabrication or usage regime of the manufacturedproduct;the potentially deleterious volume change is thereforeavoided.4.Ordering Information4.1 The buyer shall specify the following information on theorder:4.1.1 Quantity(weight of delivered product).4.1.2 Nominal particle size range and applicable tolerancesin accordance with U.S.Standard Sieve Series(SpecificationE11).Test Method C371 and Test Method C117 and Specifi-cation E11 may be applied for particles larger than 37 m.Forparticle sizes less than 37 m,the particle size distribution willbe determined using a method agreed upon between the buyerand the seller.4.1.3 Stabilizing AdditiveThe amount and types of stabi-lizing additives(if any, including limits).4.1.4 Lot size.4.1.5 Sampling requirements.5.Chemical Composition5.1 A stabilizing additive may be used with the zirconiumoxide. The recommended stabilizing additive is either calcium1This specification is under the
