Designation:C1385/C1385M10Standard Practice forSampling Materials for Shotcrete1This standard is issued under the fixed designation C1385/C1385M;the number immediately following the designation indicates theyear of original adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of lastreapproval.A superscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This practice covers procedures for obtaining represen-tative samples of materials to be shotcreted. The practicecovers sampling from stationary and truck mixers, volumetricand continuous mixing equipment, and bag and bulk delivery.1.2 The values stated in either inch-pound or SI units are tobe regarded separately as standard.Within the text, the SI unitsare shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are notexact equivalents;therefore, each system shall be used inde-pendently of the other.Combining values from the two systemsmay result in nonconformance with this practice.1.3 This standard does not purport to address the safetyconcerns,if any, associated with its use.It is the responsibilityof the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety andhealth practices and determine the applicability of regulatorylimitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2C125 Terminology Relating to Concrete and Concrete Ag-gregates3.Terminology3.1 For definitions of terms used in this standard, refer toTerminology C125.4.Significance and Use4.1 This practice is used to obtain representative samples ofmaterials delivered to the shotcrete machine. These samplesare used to perform tests to determine compliance with thespecifications under which the material is furnished.5.Procedure5.1 Composite samples are required by this practice, unlessspecifically made exempt by procedures governing the tests tobe performed, such as tests to determine uniformity of consis-tency and mixer efficiency.Procedures used to select thespecific test batches are not described in this practice, but it isrecommended that random sampling be used to determineoverall specification compliance.5.2 The size of an individual sample shall be a minimum of12 kg 25 lb,the size of the composite sample shall be aminimum of 35 kg 75 lb.The composite sample shall be largeenough to perform the required tests.5.3 Sampling shall be performed as the shotcrete material isdelivered to the shotcrete machine. The procedures used insampling shall include the use of every precaution that willassist in obtaining samples that are truly representative of thenature and condition of the material sampled as follows:5.3.1 Sampling Dry Process Shotcrete MaterialsSamplethe material by collecting two or more portions taken atregularly spaced intervals during discharge of the middle of thebatch or two or more random portions from the discharge ofcontinuous mixers.Combine the portions into one sample fortesting purposes.Do not obtain portions of the compositesample from the first 15%or the last 15%of the discharge.5.3.2 Sampling Wet Process Shotcrete MaterialSample asdescribed in 5.3.1 within the following limits.5.3.2.1 The elapsed time between obtaining the first and lastportions of the composite sample shall be as short as possiblebut in no instance shall exceed 15 min.5.3.2.2 Start test for slump or air content,or both, within 5min after obtaining last portion of the composite.5.3.3 Alternative Procedure for Truck and StationaryMixersThe mixer shall be stopped and material portionsremoved by any suitable means at approximately equal dis-tances from the front and back of the drum.Composite theportions into one sample for testing.Do not obtain portionsfrom the very front and back of the drum.Sample wet processshotcrete material within the time limits described in 5.3.2.1and 5.3.2.2.5.3.4 Sampling Bagged Prepackaged MaterialRandomlyselect a single package,or more if required to perform thespecified tests, from a lot.A lot is the quantity normally placed1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee C09 on Concreteand ConcreteAggregatesand is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee C09.46 onShotcrete.Current edition approved June 15,2010.Published July 2010.Originallyapproved in 1998.Last previous edition approved in 2004 as general, this quantity will weigh from 2000 to4000 lbs 900 to 1300 kg.5.3.5 Sampling Bulk Prepackaged MaterialSample thematerial at the point of delivery to the shotcrete machine bycollecting three or more portions at regular intervals duringdischarge of the container or transportation unit.Obtain p
