Designation:C128514Standard Test Methods forDetermining Chemical Durability of Nuclear,Hazardous, andMixed Waste Glasses and Multiphase Glass Ceramics:TheProduct Consistency Test(PCT)1This standard is issued under the fixed designation C1285;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 These product consistency test methodsAand B providea measure of the chemical durability of homogeneous glasses, phase separated glasses, devitrified glasses, glass ceramics, multiphase glass ceramic waste forms,or combinationsthereof, hereafter collectively referred to as“glass wasteforms”by measuring the concentrations of the chemicalspecies released to a test solution under carefully controlledconditions.1.1.1 Test Method A is a seven-day chemical durability testperformed at 90 6 2C in a leachant of ASTM-Type I water. The test method is static and conducted in stainless steelvessels. The stainless steel vessels require a gasket to remainleak-tight.2The stainless steel vessels are considered to be“closed system”tests.Test Method A can specifically be usedto evaluate whether the chemical durability and elementalrelease characteristics of nuclear, hazardous, and mixed glasswaste forms have been consistently controlled during produc-tion.This test method is applicable to radioactive and simu-lated glass waste forms as defined above.1.1.2 Test Method B is a durability test that allows testing atvarious test durations, test temperatures, particle size andmasses of glass sample, leachant volumes, and leachant com-positions.This test method is static and can be conducted instainless steel or PFA TFE-fluorocarbon vessels. The stainlesssteel vessels are considered to be“closed system”while thePFA TFE-fluorocarbon vessels are considered to be“opensystem”tests.Test Method B can specifically be used toevaluate the relative chemical durability characteristics ofhomogeneous glasses, phase separated glasses, devitrifiedglasses, glass ceramics,or multiphase glass ceramic wasteforms,or combinations thereof. This test method is applicableto radioactive(nuclear)and mixed, hazardous, and simulatedglass waste forms as defined above.Test Method B cannot beused as a consistency test for production of high levelradioactive glass waste forms.1.2 These test methods must be performed in accordancewith all quality assurance requirements for acceptance of thedata.1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:3C92 Test Methods for Sieve Analysis and Water Content ofRefractory MaterialsC162 to radiation doses of 1 105R of beta or gamma radiation which havebeen shown not to damage TFE-fluorocarbon.If higher radiation doses areanticipated, special gaskets fabricated from metals such as copper, gold, lead, orindium are recommended.3For referenced ASTM standards, visit the ASTM website,www.astm.org,orcontact ASTM Customer Service at serviceastm.org.For Annual Book of ASTMStandards volume
