Designation:C135709Standard Test Methods forEvaluating Masonry Bond Strength1This standard is issued under the fixed designation C1357;the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or,in the case of revision, the year of last revision.A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.INTRODUCTIONBond strength between mortar and masonry units is an important physical property of masonry.Increased bond strength provides greater resistance to loads and to cracking.Bond strength thereforeinfluences structural integrity and serviceability.1.Scope*1.1 These test methods cover the evaluation of flexural bondstrength, normal to the bed joints,of masonry built of manu-factured masonry units,as determined in accordance with TestMethod C1072.Sampling and testing procedures arereferenced, and terms are defined. Two different test methodsare specified, each for a different purpose:1.1.1 The first test method is the“Test Method forLaboratory-Prepared Specimens.”Its purpose is to compare thebond strengths(under the given conditions)of masonry mor-tars.It could be used, for example,to check the quality ofmortar products after production,or to indicate the bondstrength(under the given conditions)of a mortar productwithout requiring the product to be tested in combination withmany different units. It is not intended to represent fieldconditions. It uses standard concrete masonry units.Mortarsare batched by weight equivalents of volume proportions andare mixed to a prescribed flow.Prisms are constructed using ajig and are bag-cured.NOTE1Standard fired clay masonry units are under development butare not now available. When their development is complete, they will beincorporated into these test methods.1.1.2 The second test method is the“Test Method forField-Prepared Specimens.”Its purpose is to evaluate the bondstrength(under the given conditions)of a particular unit-mortarcombination,either for preconstruction evaluation of materialsor for quality control purposes during construction.Mortars arebatched conventionally, and the flow is not prescribed.Prismsare constructed conventionally(no jig)and are bag-cured.1.1.3 The two test methods are not consistent, nor are theyintended to be.They are intended to be used for two differentpurposes. To make this clear, the two methods are presentedseparately.1.1.4 Appendix X1 suggests two possible criteria for assess-ing the bond strength values obtained using these test methods. These possible evaluation criteria are given for illustration onlyand are not mandatory.1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any, associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2.Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards:2C67 Test Methods for Sampling and Testing Brick andStructural Clay TileC140 Test Methods for Sampling and Testing ConcreteMasonry Units and Related
